Jensen didn’t wait for any official command to begin. The moment the lock clicked, he lunged.
His eyes were burning, his teeth bared in a snarl.
He was a blur of aggressive force, abandoning all sparring protocols.
He didn’t feint; he attacked with raw, unbridled fury.
His first strike, a powerful kick, arced directly towards my knee, just as Private Miller’s report had warned.
I twisted, just barely deflecting it with my forearm, the impact jarring my bones.
A gasp escaped my lips, but I swallowed it down.
He followed up immediately, a rapid succession of punches aimed at my head and ribs.
I danced back, parrying, blocking, trying to create space, but he pressed forward relentlessly.
His strength was immense, his blows fueled by sheer hatred.
“You think you’re tough, little girl?” he grunted, his breath hot against my ear as he closed the distance again.
“Think you can challenge me?”
A heavy punch glanced off my temple, making my vision swim for a second.
I shook my head, clearing it, forcing myself to stay focused.
My defense was purely instinctive, honed by years of training, but his intent was clear: he wasn’t trying to spar. He was trying to hurt me, to end my career, to fulfill his twisted promise.
I saw the malicious glint in his eyes as he aimed another kick, this time higher, towards my head.
I ducked, narrowly avoiding it, and tried to counter, but he was too fast, too enraged.
He grabbed my arm, twisting it, forcing me off balance.
My knee screamed as I landed awkwardly. He saw it.
A triumphant, cruel smile spread across his face.
He raised his foot, preparing a powerful stomp directly onto my already protesting knee.
I braced for impact, my entire body tensing. This was it.
Suddenly, a deafening CRACK ripped through the entire facility.
The overhead lights flickered violently, then plunged the entire arena into absolute, suffocating darkness.
A blaring emergency alarm immediately shattered the silence, a piercing, incessant shriek that echoed off the unseen walls.
The sudden chaos disoriented Jensen. His foot, mid-stomp, wavered.
He stumbled, losing his footing on the padded mat, letting go of my arm.
I used the brief moment of his disorientation to scramble backwards, putting some distance between us in the pitch black.
The alarm shrieked, making it impossible to hear anything else, or even my own thoughts.
I could hear Jensen cursing, flailing wildly in the darkness, trying to regain his balance.
“What the hell was that?” he roared, his voice thick with confusion and fury.
I stayed silent, my heart hammering, trying to gauge his position, trying to find an exit.
Then, a faint, rustling sound, barely audible over the alarm, came from near the door I had entered.
A quiet gasp.
My blood froze. I wasn’t the only one in here.
Private Chloe Bell.
Her face, bright with admiration, flashed in my mind. She had looked up to me. She was earnest, enthusiastic.
And she had been expressly ordered, like everyone else, to stay away from the arena.
She must have snuck in, perhaps to watch me, just as she often tried to observe my drills.
“Bell? What are you doing here?” Jensen’s enraged voice cut through the alarm, closer to the door now. He must have heard the rustling too.
“I… I just wanted to… to see, First Sergeant,” Bell’s terrified whisper carried through the dark, small and fragile.
I heard rapid movement. Bell was trying to escape, trying to find the door in the chaos.
Jensen, still disoriented, his rage amplified by the sudden intrusion and the darkness, took a wild swing.
He must have heard her, felt her nearby. He was aiming for me, for the source of his current frustrations.
But I was further away, scrambling along the wall.
His desperate, uncontrolled strike connected with something else.
A sickening CRACK, distinct even over the blaring alarm, echoed through the darkness.
A small, strangled cry.
Then, the heavy thud of a body collapsing onto the padded floor, a sound that stopped my heart.
The alarm continued its incessant shriek, but in that horrifying instant, it sounded impossibly distant.
Silence. Then a low moan.
Emergency lights, a sickly yellow-green, flickered on, barely illuminating the scene.
My gaze immediately snapped to the source of the sound, to the dim pool of light.
And there she was.
Private Chloe Bell.
Lying motionless on the mat, a small, dark pool of blood already forming under her head.
Her eyes were closed. Her breathing was shallow, ragged.
Jensen stood over her, frozen, his hand still extended in a grotesque follow-through, his face contorted in a mask of dawning, gut-wrenching horror.
His intended target had been me.
But fate, or something far crueler, had intervened.
The spar was aborted. The confrontation was over.
But the tragedy had just begun.
My legs felt like lead. My throat closed up.
The emergency lights continued to flicker, casting long, grotesque shadows.
The blaring alarm suddenly felt like a siren wailing a mournful, agonizing lament.
