The public scrutiny intensified, making the city a suffocating place. Every newspaper, every whispered conversation, seemed to carry another barb aimed at the Thornefield name.

Julian Sterling, clearly lacking his mother’s composure, buckled under the pressure. The forensic audit was unearthing specific, undeniable fraudulent transfers directly linked to him.

Mr. Finch had quietly informed me that federal investigators were building a strong case for criminal charges related to wire fraud and money laundering.

I could only imagine the frantic conversations between Julian and Victoria. Their carefully constructed partnership was fracturing under the weight of genuine legal peril.

Julian’s panic reached a breaking point. He decided to flee.

He covertly booked a first-class flight to São Paulo, Brazil, using a recently acquired, subtly altered passport under a new name: “Julian Vance.” He withdrew a substantial sum, nearly $400,000, in cash from an account Victoria had set aside for “emergency legal fees,” hoping to start anew in a country without an easy extradition treaty with the U.S.

He thought he was being clever, meticulously planning his escape. But Julian, for all his arrogance, lacked true intellectual depth. He had burned too many bridges, alienated too many people with his privileged arrogance.

A tip-off, confirmed later by Mr. Finch to be from a disgruntled former financial advisor who Julian had recently insulted and then dismissed without severance, reached federal agents. The advisor, resentful and with a long memory, knew Julian’s habits and desperation.

The agents moved swiftly.

Julian Sterling was apprehended at Boston Logan International Airport, just minutes before his flight was scheduled to depart.

I first saw it on the evening news. A live report from Logan, showing a chaotic scene around Gate B32. Cameras flashed incessantly.

Then, the clear, unmistakable image of Julian Sterling. He was being escorted, rather forcefully, by two federal agents, his designer suit rumpled, his face a mask of utter despair and fury.

His hands were cuffed behind his back, visible as he tried to pull away from the agents. He stumbled, cursing loudly as he was pushed forward.

The reporter, breathless with excitement, detailed the charges: attempted flight to avoid prosecution, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit fraud.

The spectacle was excruciating. Fellow travelers, caught in the unexpected drama, stared, whipped out their phones, and whispered.

“That’s Julian Sterling!” I heard one woman exclaim on the television broadcast. “The Thornefield heir! My goodness, what a scandal.”

A fresh wave of nausea washed over me. It wasn’t just a legal victory. It was a public humiliation, played out on national television, further cementing the Thornefield name’s fall from grace.

I thought of Mrs. Albright, and the multitude of other society friends who had distanced themselves. What would they say now? Their polite avoidance would surely turn into outright condemnation.

My phone rang. It was Mr. Finch.

“Eleanor,” his voice was grim. “You’ve seen the news, I presume.”

“I have,” I managed, my voice flat. “Julian. Arrested.”

“Yes. A clear case of attempted flight,” he confirmed. “It strengthens the criminal case against him significantly.”

“And against Victoria?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.

“It certainly doesn’t help her position,” Finch replied. “His direct involvement in several of the more egregious transfers, now compounded by this, paints a very damning picture of their joint venture.”

“Justice,” I said, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “This is what justice looks like?”

“Sometimes, Eleanor,” he said, his voice laced with a weary sympathy, “justice is a messy, public affair. Especially when vast sums of money and powerful names are involved.”

I pictured Julian, cuffed and humiliated, on the tarmac. Then I pictured my father, meticulously planning this intricate trap. The ruthless calculation.

This was his revenge, I realized, playing out in agonizing public detail. But the collateral damage was immense.

The Thornefield name, once a symbol of quiet dignity, was now irrevocably linked with scandal, greed, and public disgrace. Julian’s arrest was not a private matter. It was a grand, national drama, and we were all unwilling participants.

My own sense of relief at Julian’s apprehension was short-lived, replaced by a profound sense of exhaustion and despair. The battle might be moving forward, but every step was tearing at the very fabric of my family’s legacy. It was a victory, but one that felt profoundly, irrevocably tainted.
