Chapter 9: A Matriarch’s Burden

The weight of Leo Maxwell’s ledger photo in my hands felt like the fate of the Rossi family. I knew what I had to do. With Vito by my side, and Consigliere Moretti’s solemn presence affirming the gravity of the matter, we made our way to the secluded estate of Don Carlo “The Old Man” Bianchi.

Don Carlo was the elder statesman of our world, a man whose word held ultimate authority, even in his frail age. His home, far from the city’s bustle, was a testament to a bygone era: quiet, dignified, and filled with the silent power of history. We were ushered into a sunlit conservatory, where Don Carlo sat in a high-backed chair, a thin blanket over his knees. His body was fragile, but his eyes, though clouded by age, held a surprising sharpness.

“Carmela,” he greeted, his voice raspy but clear. “Roberto. And Vito. What brings you to my humble abode, in the midst of a wedding day no less?”

His words carried an edge, a clear understanding that our presence here on such a day implied a profound disruption.

Moretti stepped forward first, bowing slightly. “Don Carlo, Matriarch Rossi has uncovered a matter of grave importance to the families, one that threatens the very honor codes you yourself established.”

I presented the Falcone crest pin first. “Don Carlo, this was found near my handbag, moments after Elena Falcone publicly accused me of theft and assaulted me.” I explained Vito’s observation of Isabella. “It was planted, Don Carlo. The brooch was never stolen.”

Don Carlo took the pin, his ancient fingers tracing the Falcone crest. His expression remained unreadable, but a flicker in his eyes betrayed his understanding. He then handed it back to me.

“A calculated insult,” he observed, his voice soft. “A deliberate act of dishonor, publicly orchestrated. A very dangerous game for a young woman to play.”

Next, I offered him the grainy photograph of the ledger page. “This, Don Carlo, provides the full context of that game.”

Don Carlo took the photo, holding it close to his eyes. He peered at the script, his brow furrowing in concentration. He slowly nodded, a faint, almost imperceptible tremor running through his hand.

“This handwriting,” he mused, his voice growing firmer. “I know this hand. Marco Falcone. He still uses that old-fashioned ink.”

He looked up, his gaze fixing on me. “This details the diversion of funds. The acquisition of Rossi family properties, through deception. A blatant usurpation of established territory and influence, timed precisely to coincide with the wedding. And after your ‘oversight’ was ‘neutralized’.”

His eyes, which had seemed so dim, now glowed with a cold fury. “This is a direct violation of the articles I personally drafted decades ago. The articles that prevent one family from preying upon another under the guise of alliance. This is pre-meditated betrayal. Not just of the Rossi family, Carmela, but of the syndicate’s very foundation.”

Don Carlo slowly, deliberately, crumpled the photo of the ledger in his hand. The crisp sound was shockingly loud in the quiet room.

“The wedding,” he declared, his voice rising, gaining strength, “if it were to proceed, would be a farce. A monumental deception, built on dishonor and avarice. It would mock every principle we hold sacred, every agreement we have ever forged. It would set a precedent that could unravel the very fabric of our world.”

His gaze swept over Moretti and Vito, before settling firmly on me. “Marco Falcone believes he is cunning. He believes he can manipulate the rules. But I built these rules, and I know every loophole, every betrayal they were designed to prevent.”

“What Marco planned,” Moretti added, “was to use the wedding as a shield, believing the public nature of the ceremony would deter any investigation into his true intentions, especially with Matriarch Rossi discredited.”

“Indeed,” Don Carlo affirmed, a bitter smile on his lips. “He used the most sacred of alliances as a weapon. A truly despicable act.”

He leaned back in his chair, his eyes closing for a moment, as if the weight of the revelation was suddenly immense. When he opened them again, his gaze was sharp and direct.

“Roberto,” he said, turning to Moretti. “This ‘Capo’s Vow’ document you spoke of earlier. The one Carmela signed. It grants her absolute authority in matters of her honor and the immediate proceedings, does it not?”

“It does, Don Carlo,” Moretti confirmed. “It specifies that in the event of a grave compromise to her honor or direct malicious intent aimed at her position as guarantor, she has the full right to nullify the entire agreement and initiate a review.”

Don Carlo nodded slowly, a satisfied look on his face. “Good. The rules, Roberto, exist for a reason. To prevent this very kind of treachery. Marco has sown the wind. Now, he must reap the whirlwind.”

His eyes fixed on Moretti, a silent command passing between them. “This ‘Capo’s Vow’ gives Carmela full authority in this matter. What will she do?”

The question was rhetorical, a test, but also an empowerment. Don Carlo had not just validated my evidence; he had confirmed the sanctity of the old ways, the very foundation of our power. He had given me his blessing, a clear mandate to act. My resolve hardened, knowing that the most powerful man in our world now stood with me.
