At my university commencement ceremony in Boston, my daughter-in-law Chloe stepped into the processional line and struck me across the face with enough force to send my black graduation cap flying...
Julian’s guesthouse in Concord was a small, cozy haven, nestled among tall pines. The quiet was a stark contrast to the relentless legal assaults of the past few days. I was trying to read one of David’s old journals, but the words kept blurring.
Suddenly, Julian’s phone rang from the kitchen. I heard him answer, his voice calm at first, then growing sharper, a note of surprise in it.
“Brett Carver? I haven’t heard from you in years.”
My ears pricked up. I didn’t know a Brett Carver, but Julian’s tone hinted at history.
He walked into the living room, holding the phone slightly away from his ear, a frown etched on his face. He mouthed, “Chloe’s ex-fiancé.”
My breath hitched. Chloe had been engaged before Mark? This was new information, a hidden chapter in her past.
Julian listened intently for a few more minutes, occasionally interjecting with a “Yes, I saw it,” or “Unbelievable, isn’t it?”
When he finally hung up, he sat on the edge of the armchair opposite me, his expression grave.
“That was Brett Carver,” he said, confirming my guess. “He’s an accountant. Chloe was engaged to him about five years ago.”
I waited, my gaze fixed on him.
“He saw the news, Maya. The graduation spectacle, the legal filings, all of it. It’s been picked up by a few local alumni blogs.”
He leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. “He said he couldn’t stand by and watch her do this again.”
“Again?” I echoed, a cold premonition settling in my gut.
“He revealed that Chloe used almost identical tactics five years ago to destroy his family’s small manufacturing business. Fake contract claims, aggressive legal maneuvers, forcing them into crippling debt.” Julian’s voice was tight with controlled anger. “She left him with $120,000 in debt, then vanished.”
A wave of nausea hit me. The chilling repetition of her methods, her relentless pursuit of financial ruin. It wasn’t just me; it was a pattern. She was a predator.
“He felt overwhelmed by guilt,” Julian continued. “He said he knows how she operates, how she sets people up.”
“Why now?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Why didn’t he stop her then?”
Julian shrugged, a gesture of weary understanding. “Fear, I suppose. And the shame of it all. He said he just wanted to escape her, and he kept silent. But seeing it happen to you, seeing Lily involved… it broke through his silence.”
He paused, then added, “He retained some old cloud backups from her. He thinks there might be something useful in them. Evidence.”
My eyes widened. Evidence. The word was a lifeline, a glimmer of light in the overwhelming darkness. Brett Carver, a ghost from Chloe’s past, had just offered us a weapon, a key to unlock her carefully constructed lies. Chloe’s shadow from the past had just stepped into our fight.
