Chapter 5: The Snake in the Garden

#content-1

The anonymous text arrived just as I was putting Mia down for her afternoon nap. My phone buzzed with an unknown number, displaying a flood of screenshots. The sender had no name, no context, just the images.

I opened the first one. It was a panicked text message from Sarah Jenkins. My “best friend.” My stomach dropped.

The first screenshot showed a message from Sarah to an unsaved contact: “It’s gone too far! David’s actually in prison. She wasn’t bluffing. Eleanor, this wasn’t the deal!”

My fingers trembled as I scrolled through the subsequent images. There were more, a frantic exchange between Sarah and someone saved only as “E.” The messages painted a grim picture, confirming Eleanor’s full, calculated scheme.

“E” (Eleanor) to Sarah: “Stay calm, Sarah. This is a temporary setback. Amelia is resourceful, yes, but predictable. She’ll burn herself out. We discussed this. The directorship at Meridian will be yours once she’s out of the picture. Her own company, delivered right into your hands.”

Sarah to E: “But she’s fighting back! She framed David! This isn’t just about her losing her ‘position’ in the family. She’s actually dangerous. I don’t want to get caught up in this.”

E to Sarah: “You are already ‘caught up,’ dear. Your name is on the affidavit regarding Amelia’s ‘unfit’ state. You testified to her ‘instability.’ You’re an accomplice. Do you want Amelia to realize the extent of your perfidy? Or do you want your directorship and the life you’ve always coveted?”

The cold, hard truth slammed into me. Eleanor had coerced Sarah into participating, leveraging Sarah’s insecurity and jealousy against me. The “best friend” I had confided in, the one who had cried with me over David’s manufactured slights, had been promised a piece of my empire. She hadn’t just stood by while David dragged my infants out into the rain; she had actively conspired against me, believing she would benefit from my downfall.

My anger, usually a controlled, precise instrument, flared into a hot, sickening rage. Not just at Eleanor, but at Sarah. The betrayal cut deeper than David’s, because it came from someone I had genuinely trusted. My “best friend,” a confidante. She had sold me out for a directorship, a title, a slice of a life she coveted but never had the courage or skill to build herself.

I scrolled further, my eyes scanning the conversation.

Sarah to E: “What about the twins? She’s obsessed with them. She’ll never let anyone take them away. This complicates everything.”

E to Sarah: “The twins are a problem, yes. But they are David’s. And David, once his name is cleared, will have custody, with my assistance. You focus on securing your future, Sarah. Amelia will wither once she sees she has nothing left. Including you.”

A profound pang of disappointment settled over me, eclipsing the initial fury. It wasn’t just the betrayal itself, but the utter emptiness of it. Sarah, a woman I had shared years of my life with, whose struggles I had listened to and supported, had been reduced to a pawn in Eleanor’s game. She was pathetic, a willing tool, manipulated by promises of grandeur she hadn’t earned.

The anonymous sender followed up with one more text: “She’s desperate. They both are. She thinks she’s still in control.”

I recognized the number. It was Alex’s burner phone. He must have somehow intercepted Sarah’s frantic communications or convinced her to send them to me anonymously, perhaps playing on her guilt or fear. His meticulous investigation was yielding even more than I had anticipated.

I picked up Mia, holding her close, her soft head resting against my shoulder. My initial revenge against David, while satisfying, felt almost superficial now. This new layer of betrayal, this calculated scheme by Eleanor to not only oust me but to put Sarah in my company, revealed the true extent of Eleanor’s ambition. It wasn’t just about protecting David. It was about *owning* everything, controlling every aspect of her world, even my company.

Eleanor’s manipulations ran far deeper than just money, or protecting David’s false lineage. She wanted my company. She wanted my power. And she was willing to use anyone, even my so-called best friend, to get it. This hinted at a truly devastating secret yet to come, something that fueled her insatiable need for control. The puzzle pieces were falling into place, but the full picture was still shrouded in a terrifying darkness.
