Chapter 5: The Uninvited Guest

#content-1

Clara called Daniel two days later, her tone surprisingly calm. “Hi, Daniel. Just confirming for Sunday dinner at Mom’s place. Seven o’clock?”

There was a heavy sigh on the other end. “Clara, Anya isn’t happy about this. She thinks it’s a trap.”

“It’s an opportunity for her to explain things, then,” Clara replied, her voice firm. “To clear her name, if she can. Mom deserves that. We all do.”

She paused, then added casually, “Oh, and a mutual acquaintance will also be joining us. Someone who can help us all understand the complexities of financial investments.” This was the hook, the veiled threat.

This was Twist 6. The surprise guest at the family dinner isn’t just Mr. Black, but Clara also secretly invited Daniel’s managing partner, an unspoken threat to Daniel’s career if his wife’s actions escalate into a scandal. This adds another layer of pressure and ensures Daniel cannot easily side with Anya.

Silence stretched on the line. Then, Daniel’s voice, tight with alarm, said, “Clara, what exactly did you mean by ‘mutual acquaintance’? Anya just told me Mr. Henderson called her. My managing partner.”

Clara kept her voice even. “Yes, Mr. Henderson received an invitation from me. I thought it would be beneficial for him to hear Anya’s explanation firsthand. Given her position at Veridian, and your own, it’s important that all parties understand the situation clearly.”

She could practically hear Daniel’s blood run cold. His managing partner. Not just Mr. Black, but a direct threat to his career, his livelihood, his entire carefully constructed life. Anya had clearly made a frantic call to him.

“Clara, you can’t!” Daniel exploded, his voice laced with panic. “You can’t invite Mr. Henderson! This is a family matter!”

“It stopped being just a family matter when Mom’s life savings went missing,” Clara retorted, her calm exterior belying the storm inside her. “It stopped being a family matter when Anya started spreading rumors about Mom’s mental state. This is about accountability, Daniel. And sometimes, accountability comes with professional consequences.”

“But Mr. Henderson…” Daniel stammered, his mind clearly racing through the devastating implications. “If this gets out, it could ruin both of us! Anya’s career, and mine by association! Veridian doesn’t tolerate scandal.”

“Then Anya should have considered that before she defrauded Mom,” Clara shot back. “The choice is hers: face a difficult conversation with a few people who care about her, or face the full force of a regulatory investigation. Mr. Henderson’s presence ensures she understands the stakes.”

She knew Daniel was now trapped. He couldn’t refuse to come, as that would only look worse for Anya and, by extension, himself. He also couldn’t allow Anya to continue with her lies, not with his managing partner present.

“She’s in a panic,” Daniel admitted, his voice deflated. “She’s furious with you. She’s… she’s scrambling.”

“Good,” Clara said simply. “Tell her seven o’clock. Don’t be late.”

She hung up, a grim satisfaction settling over her. Anya’s carefully constructed world was beginning to crack, and the fear in Daniel’s voice confirmed it. This was no longer a game Anya could play with dismissive chuckles and whispered lies. The stakes were too high.

The next few days were a blur of nervous anticipation for Clara. She briefed Elara, explaining the gravity of the situation, showing her the documents, and preparing her for what would undoubtedly be a tense and emotional evening. Elara, though still fragile, held a quiet resolve. The proof had brought her a measure of peace, replacing confusion with righteous anger.

“She always seemed so sweet,” Elara murmured, looking at Anya’s name on a corporate registration document. “How could she do this?”

“Some people wear a very convincing mask, Mom,” Clara said, squeezing her hand. “But masks always fall off eventually.”

Clara also made sure Elara’s house was prepared. It had to be a neutral space, not threatening, but undeniably serious. She laid out some simple appetizers, made sure the lighting was soft, but the dining room table was cleared, ready for documents.

As the clock ticked closer to Sunday evening, Clara felt a mixture of dread and grim determination. This was the moment of truth. Anya, for all her bluster, would have to face facts.

At precisely 6:55 PM, Daniel’s car pulled up. Anya was with him, her face rigid, a forced smile plastered on her lips. She wore a power suit, as if ready for a corporate negotiation rather than a family dinner. Daniel looked like he was walking to his execution.

“Elara,” Anya chirped, sweeping past Clara with barely a nod, planting a kiss on Elara’s cheek that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “So good to see you. We heard you weren’t feeling well. Daniel and I were so worried.”

Elara offered a tight-lipped smile in return. “I’m fine, Anya. Thank you.”

Anya’s eyes darted around the living room, a flicker of apprehension in her gaze. “So, where is everyone?” She expected a crowd, a general family gathering. The quiet house, with only Clara and Elara present, unnerved her.

“Just us for now,” Clara said smoothly. “We have a few things to discuss before anyone else arrives.”

Just then, the doorbell chimed. Clara opened it to find two men standing on the porch. One was Mr. Arthur Black, looking slightly less weary than at their last meeting, a briefcase in his hand. The other was a stern-looking man in a meticulously tailored suit.

“Mr. Henderson,” Clara greeted him, extending her hand. “Thank you for coming.”

Mr. Henderson offered a curt nod, his gaze sweeping past Clara to the figures inside. His eyes landed on Daniel, who looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

“Anya, Daniel,” Clara announced, gesturing them forward. “Please meet Mr. Arthur Black, formerly of Veridian’s compliance department, and Mr. Thomas Henderson, Daniel’s managing partner.”

Anya’s forced smile vanished. Her eyes widened in alarm, darting from Mr. Black’s impassive face to Mr. Henderson’s stern one. The color drained from her cheeks, replaced by a ghastly pallor. She had clearly underestimated Clara. This wasn’t just a threat to her career; it was an ambush.

Daniel looked utterly devastated, his shoulders slumping. He could feel the weight of Mr. Henderson’s silent judgment already. This was the moment his carefully constructed neutrality would shatter.

“Please, everyone, come to the dining room,” Clara said, leading the way. The table, once a place for shared meals and laughter, was now set for a confrontation. The air was thick with unspoken accusations and the heavy scent of impending doom. Anya had walked right into the trap, believing her charm and legalistic jargon would save her. But Clara had set the stage for a different kind of truth.
