Chapter 7: Echoes in the Aftermath

The discovery of Julian and Isabelle Moreau felt like a seismic shift in my understanding of my father and our family. The layers of Elias’s hidden past were far more complex than I’d ever imagined, and the implications of a secret half-brother were immense. It made me re-evaluate everything, especially Milo’s deep-seated resentment. Could his bitterness, his entitlement, stem from something more than just perceived favoritism? Could it be connected to this decades-old secret?

My resolve solidified. I needed answers, and the most direct path seemed to be through DNA. I knew Milo was Elias’s legally adopted son, but if he wasn’t biologically Elias’s, then everything about his claim to Elias’s creative rights, his entire legal standing, could be undermined. It was a risky, desperate plan, but necessary.

Elias’s health continued its slow, inexorable decline. He spent most of his days in a daze, his lucidity ebbing and flowing. Milo and Serena, however, seemed to thrive on his weakness, their surveillance on me intensifying. Serena would casually “drop by” when I was with Elias, her eyes scanning the room, her questions laced with thinly veiled suspicion. Milo would make pointed remarks about my “sudden interest” in Elias’s affairs, always with a smirk. I felt their gaze, heavy and constant, making every move a calculated risk.

I knew Elias had routine blood tests scheduled with a private nurse, a sweet, unsuspecting woman named Clara who visited the mansion twice a week. This was my window.

I approached Clara one afternoon, when Milo and Serena were out, ostensibly at a charity luncheon. I had rehearsed my lines carefully.

“Clara,” I began, trying to sound as casual as possible, “I was hoping you could help me with something related to my father’s health.”

She smiled, her expression warm.

“Of course, Elara. Anything for Elias.”

“He’s been quite concerned recently,” I continued, lowering my voice conspiratorially, “about a very rare genetic marker that runs in his mother’s side of the family. Apparently, it’s linked to a particular enzyme deficiency, and it can cause… well, certain cognitive issues later in life.” I pulled a fake research paper I’d quickly cobbled together from obscure medical journals, highlighting a specific gene. “My father is keen to participate in a study. He thinks his legacy might help advance medical science.”

Clara frowned slightly, examining the paper.

“I’m not familiar with this marker, Elara. And Dr. Thompson hasn’t mentioned anything.”

“Oh, it’s very new research,” I quickly interjected. “Very cutting-edge. It wouldn’t be part of his standard panel. But if you could just collect an additional, separate sample for this specific genetic screening… it would mean the world to him. He’s very passionate about contributing.”

I offered her a substantial cash payment, wrapped discreetly in an envelope, for her “extra time and discretion.” Her eyes widened slightly at the sight of the money, though she quickly recovered her professional demeanor. The lure of an extra, off-the-books payment, coupled with Elias’s supposed desire to contribute to science, was enough.

“Alright, Elara,” she said, her voice a little softer. “For Elias, and for a good cause. But I’ll need a signed consent form, of course, explaining the nature of the study.”

I assured her I would have Elias sign one, fabricating details about a fictional research institute. It was a web of lies, but it felt justified. That afternoon, under the guise of Elias’s routine blood draw, Clara collected an additional vial of blood, labeling it according to my fabricated instructions. I watched, my heart in my throat, as the crucial sample was taken.

The next step was Milo. This was trickier. He was rarely out of my sight for long, and his personal space was guarded. However, Milo, despite his pretensions, was a creature of habit and, ultimately, a little messy. He had his own private bathroom, rarely cleaned, an extension of his chaotic personality.

I waited for the opportune moment. It came during one of Milo’s long, boisterous phone calls in the living room, where he was loudly lambasting some studio executive. Serena was out. Elias was napping. I seized the chance.

I slipped into Milo’s bathroom. The air was thick with the scent of stale cologne and something vaguely chemical. His countertop was cluttered. And there it was, lying carelessly beside the sink: his toothbrush. A cheap plastic one, already frayed at the bristles. A perfect source of DNA.

My hand shook as I grabbed it. I quickly wrapped it in a clean tissue, then sealed it in a small, ziplock bag I’d brought specifically for this purpose. I wiped down the area where it had been, trying to erase any sign of my intrusion, then slipped out of the bathroom as quietly as I’d entered, my pulse racing.

I had both samples. Now came the hard part: finding a lab willing to perform a discreet, unofficial paternity test. Alistair Henderson, though unwilling to take overt risks, gave me a veiled referral to a small, private forensics lab he knew of, one that often handled sensitive celebrity cases without asking too many questions. He stressed, again, the need for extreme caution.

As the days crawled by, the tension in the mansion became suffocating. Elias’s memory continued to falter, his physical strength diminishing. He would sometimes look at me with a lost expression, as if unsure who I was. Milo and Serena’s control grew tighter. They openly discussed Elias’s “frailty” with family friends, subtly discrediting anything he might say, and carefully managing his public appearances. They restricted my access to him, always ensuring one of them, or a new, intimidating security guard they’d hired, was present.

The pressure mounted with every passing hour. I knew I was playing with fire. If Milo or Serena ever found out what I was doing, my nascent career, my very safety, would be jeopardized. But the thought of Elias, trapped and exploited, with a lifetime of secrets swirling around him, propelled me forward. I had to know. For Julian, for Elias, for the truth. The results of the DNA test felt like the unseen thread that would either unravel the entire tapestry of deception or tie it into an even tighter, more painful knot.
