Chapter 19: Echoes of Truth

The doorbell chimed a polite, almost timid, sound in Sister Eleanor’s quiet home. Nia smoothed her dress and took a deep breath. She clutched a small casserole dish, pretending it was a gesture of neighborly kindness, a pretext for her visit.

Sister Eleanor opened the door, her face etched with a mix of surprise and the faintest hint of unease. Her silver hair was neatly pinned, and her small, wiry frame was dressed in a simple, modest housecoat. The scent of lavender and old books emanated from her home.

“Nia, dear,” Sister Eleanor said, her voice soft. “What a surprise.”

“Sister Eleanor, I hope I’m not disturbing you,” Nia replied, offering the casserole. “Mama Selena mentioned you might need some help with odd jobs around the house, and I made extra shepherd’s pie.”

Sister Eleanor accepted the dish, her thin fingers trembling slightly as they brushed Nia’s. “That’s very thoughtful, child. Please, come in.”

Nia stepped into the small, meticulously kept living room. Doilies covered every surface, and faded photographs of “The Way’s” founders adorned the walls. It felt like stepping into a time capsule, a reflection of the past that Selena so carefully controlled.

They sat on a floral sofa that sagged slightly in the middle. Nia began with innocuous small talk, praising Sister Eleanor’s immaculate garden, asking about her favorite hymns. She watched Sister Eleanor carefully, noting the way her eyes darted away when Nia mentioned anything even remotely connected to “The Way” leadership.

After a few minutes, Nia subtly steered the conversation. “Sister Eleanor, I’ve been helping my father, Marcus, with some research.”

Sister Eleanor’s entire body seemed to stiffen. She gripped her hands together in her lap, her knuckles turning white.

“He’s very interested in that sweet baby, Maisie, from the community center,” Nia continued, her voice light, as if discussing a casual matter. “He’s trying to adopt her. You know, give her a good home.”

A flicker of something—fear? guilt?—crossed Sister Eleanor’s face. She didn’t meet Nia’s eyes. Instead, she stared intently at a spot on the carpet.

“Maisie is… a precious soul,” Sister Eleanor mumbled, her voice almost inaudible.

“Indeed,” Nia said, pressing gently. “It’s so sad, all those families rejecting her. And that ‘private surrender’ on her file… it seemed so unusual. So quick.”

Sister Eleanor flinched. Her hands began to tremble more noticeably, a visible tremor that she tried to hide by pressing them tighter together. She took a ragged breath, then let it out slowly.

“Some things are… best left untouched, Nia,” Sister Eleanor said, her voice hushed. “Certain matters are handled for the good of the community. For the purity of the bloodline.”

The phrase, “purity of the bloodline,” resonated with a chilling familiarity. It was the same veiled language Selena used to justify her most callous decisions, a phrase that carried immense weight within “The Way.” This was the core of Selena’s cruel dogma.

“But a baby, Sister Eleanor?” Nia asked, her voice softening, feigning concern. “Surely, a child should always have a home, no matter their circumstance?”

Sister Eleanor suddenly stood up, her movements jerky. She walked to the window, her back to Nia, and stared out at her small backyard. The silence stretched, thick with unspoken tension. Nia could almost feel the weight of Sister Eleanor’s internal struggle.

“Sister Eleanor,” Nia said, rising slowly to her feet. “I know you were Selena’s aide for many years. You handled so many important documents for her. Confidential matters.”

Sister Eleanor turned, her eyes wide, almost pleading. There were unshed tears in her eyes. “Nia, you don’t understand.”

“I think I’m beginning to,” Nia replied, her gaze firm but not unkind. “I think you’ve been carrying a heavy burden. And I think it has something to do with Maisie’s surrender.”

Sister Eleanor wrung her hands. Her usual composed demeanor had completely crumbled. The fear in her eyes was palpable, a stark contrast to the calm, faithful elder Nia had always known. It was the fear of Selena, her influence, her retribution.

“Selena… she has a way,” Sister Eleanor finally managed to stammer, her voice barely a whisper. “A way of convincing you that her will is the Lord’s will. That defiance is damnation.”

Nia took a step closer, her heart aching for the older woman. She saw a specific, personal cruelty in Selena’s actions, not just towards Maisie, but towards Sister Eleanor too. Selena had leveraged Eleanor’s faith and loyalty, making her a pawn in a heartbreaking scheme.

“Did she pressure you, Sister Eleanor?” Nia asked directly, her voice gentle. “To sign those papers? To make Maisie disappear?”

Sister Eleanor choked back a sob. She didn’t answer directly, but her silence, and the raw pain in her eyes, were confirmation enough. The fear was etched so deeply onto her face that it spoke volumes.

Nia knew she couldn’t push any further right then. Sister Eleanor was clearly terrified, trapped between her conscience and her deep-seated fear of Selena. But the seed had been planted. The crack in Sister Eleanor’s façade was undeniable.

“Thank you for the tea, Sister Eleanor,” Nia said, walking towards the door. “And for sharing your thoughts.”

As Nia left, she could feel Sister Eleanor’s gaze on her back, heavy with unspoken words. The air outside felt cool and fresh, a stark contrast to the stifling atmosphere of Sister Eleanor’s fear-filled home. Nia knew that Sister Eleanor wouldn’t be able to carry her secret for much longer. The weight of her guilt, and the fear of Selena, were tearing her apart.
