I stumbled out of that basement room, the sweet, metallic stench clinging to my clothes. The truth was horrifying, undeniable. This wasn’t some benign spirit.
The next few days were a blur of frantic phone calls. I tried calling the police, but without Eleanor giving a statement, and with Brandon and Sierra’s “medical notes,” they could only advise me to seek a lawyer for a custody dispute. It was useless.
Then, the calls started coming in. Not from police, but from family.
My sister-in-law, Eleanor’s older sister, Brenda, called first. Her voice was clipped, disapproving.
“Arthur, I heard what you’re doing to Brandon and Sierra,” she said, without even a greeting. “Harassing them, making up stories.”
“Brenda, Eleanor is in danger!” I tried to explain, my voice rising. “They’ve got a ritual room in their basement. It’s some kind of black magic.”
“Oh, Arthur,” she sighed, a dismissive sound. “That old paranoia again. You need to let Brandon and Sierra care for Eleanor. They’re her children. They know what’s best.”
Her words were identical to Brandon’s. A chilling echo.
Then came Eleanor’s brother, Mark. “Listen, Art,” he said, his tone strained but firm. “I love Eleanor, but she’s with her son. You’ve been through a lot. Maybe you’re not seeing things clearly.”
“Brandon called us,” Mark confessed, his voice dropping slightly. “He said you’re unstable, that you’re trying to take advantage of Eleanor’s condition for… for money, I think he implied.”
Money. Of course. It was always about money for Brandon.
One after another, cousins, aunts, even distant family members I hadn’t spoken to in years, called. Each conversation was a variation on the same theme: Arthur is unstable. Brandon and Sierra are good, loving children. Let them care for Eleanor.
The carefully orchestrated campaign of gaslighting hit me hard. Brandon and Sierra weren’t just neglecting Eleanor; they were actively isolating me, poisoning my relationships with the rest of the family.
They were building a wall around Eleanor, not just with locks and threats, but with lies and manipulation, ensuring no one would believe me. I was truly alone against them.
