I slipped back into the hospital through a service entrance I knew would be unlocked at this time of day. My blood thrummed with a mix of fear and righteous anger. Evelyn’s life was on the line.

I made it to Evelyn’s hospice wing, my heart pounding in my chest. The nurses’ station was buzzing. Elena was there, along with two other nurses, Maria and David, who had always been kind to Evelyn.

“They’re coming, Dr. Brooks,” Elena whispered, her eyes wide. “Security just called up. County officers are on their way.”

“We need to buy time,” I said, my voice low but urgent. “As much as we can get.”

I looked around Evelyn’s small, sterile room. There wasn’t much. A bed, a small dresser, a bedside table.

“Can you find me anything heavy?” I asked, looking at Elena. “Anything at all that can block this door from the inside.”

Elena, Maria, and David exchanged glances, then nodded. They understood. They were risking their jobs, possibly their licenses, for Evelyn.

They moved with efficiency born of years in a high-pressure environment. David, a stocky nurse, wrestled a heavy medical supply cart over to the door. Elena dragged a small, metal filing cabinet. Maria pulled Evelyn’s own bed up against it, the wheels squeaking loudly.

Evelyn, lying in her bed, watched us with wide, unfocused eyes. Her frail hand reached out weakly.

“They’re not going to take me,” she rasped, her voice thin but resolute. “This is my home. This hospital is my home.”

Her words solidified my resolve. This was her home. Not Julian’s.

Just then, loud footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. A voice, deep and authoritative, barked orders.

“Open up! County officers! We have an official transfer order!”

I pushed Evelyn’s call button. The flashing red light and the shrill alarm pierced the hospital’s usual quiet. It was a call for help.

“They’re here,” Elena whispered.

I leaned close to Evelyn. “We’re going to protect you, Evelyn. I promise.”

I started frantically pulling out drawers from Evelyn’s bedside table, looking for *anything* that might relate to the “ground lease” Arthur had mentioned. Legal documents, old letters, anything Evelyn might have kept close. There was so little, just a few old photographs and a worn prayer book.

The door shuddered under a heavy impact. The supply cart groaned.
