Chapter 6: The Harvest Assembly’s Reckoning

#content-1

The annual Harvest Assembly was the most sacred event in Oakhaven. It was meant to be a time of gratitude and community, but this year, a palpable unease hung in the air. King Elias, flanked by Queen Isolde, presided over the gathering from the ceremonial platform, his expression stern. Agnes stood in the crowd, her face drawn, her gaze flicking nervously between Elias and me. Liam stood by my side, his hand resting on my arm, a silent anchor. My birth mother, still disguised as the reclusive herbalist, remained hidden in the outer edges of the crowd, her eyes fixed on me.

Elias cleared his throat, his voice resonating across the hushed assembly.

“My loyal citizens,” he began, his voice laced with the customary authority.

“We gather to give thanks for the season’s bounty.”

“But we must also address matters of consequence.”

His gaze settled on me, hard and unyielding.

“The recent ‘Trial of Purity’ has raised questions about our traditions and, regrettably, about the loyalty of certain individuals.”

He paused, letting the implication hang in the air.

“Elara Thorne, by her own admissions and the Crown’s confused signals, has sown discord and cast doubt upon the rightful leadership of Oakhaven.”

“Therefore,” Elias continued, his voice rising, “after due consideration by the Elders, and to restore harmony and trust in our sacred traditions, I move to formally banish Elara Thorne from Oakhaven.”

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Liam stiffened, his hand tightening on my arm. Agnes choked back a sob.

Just as Elias prepared to seal my fate, a clear, strong voice cut through the silence.

“I object!”

All heads turned. Sarah Jenkins stood at the edge of the platform, her reporter’s notebook open in her hand, her eyes blazing with conviction.

Elias scowled.

“Who are you to interrupt a sacred assembly?”

“I am a journalist, King Elias,” Sarah replied, her voice steady.

“And I have evidence that directly concerns the harmony and trust of Oakhaven.”

She held up the old medical ledger.

“This is a medical record from Silas Thorne, a respected healer who served this community 24 years ago. It details the true cause of death of King Alaric Blackwood.”

A murmur of confusion spread through the crowd.

“The late King Alaric died in a hunting accident,” Elias stated, his voice sharp with annoyance.

“This is ancient history.”

“Not according to this ledger,” Sarah countered, her voice ringing with authority.

“On this day, 24 years ago, King Alaric Blackwood was not killed in a hunting accident.”

She began to read aloud, her voice clear and precise.

“Symptoms included rapid onset of severe gastrointestinal distress, followed by neurological decline, muscular paralysis, and acute respiratory failure. Diagnosis: exposure to potent *Nightshade’s Kiss* toxins, administered orally.”

A wave of shock rippled through the assembly. Gasps, then angry murmurs, erupted. The hunting accident was a lie. The revered King Alaric had been poisoned.

Elias’s face turned ashen. Queen Isolde’s composure visibly cracked, a flicker of panic in her eyes.

“This is baseless slander!” Elias thundered, his voice losing its customary control.

“A fabrication!”

“Nightshade’s Kiss doesn’t grow naturally in Oakhaven,” Sarah pressed, her gaze sweeping over the enraged crowd.

“It must be cultivated. And who in this community had access to such knowledge and the means to cultivate such a deadly plant?”

All eyes turned to Elias and Isolde.

Cornered, his authority crumbling, King Elias made a desperate, calculated move. He pointed a trembling finger at Queen Isolde.

“It was *her*!” he shouted, his voice raw with fear.

“She procured the poison! She pressured me to dispose of Alaric, to cover it up! She manipulated me!”

The accusation hung in the air, thick with betrayal. Isolde, exposed by her own husband, stood frozen, her face contorted in a mask of pure fury. The crowd roared, their shock turning to outrage.

Then, in a fit of pure, unadulterated rage, Queen Isolde shrieked, her voice cutting through the din.

“You fool! You spineless usurper!”

She didn’t deny providing the poison. Instead, she pointed an accusing finger at Elias.

“It was for *you*, Elias! The poison was intended for *you*! Your weakness, your insecurity, your stolen throne!”

The assembly gasped, the layers of betrayal deepening.

“I have my own claim to leadership!” Isolde screamed, her eyes wild.

“A forgotten lineage! I intended to remove *you* and then use the ceremonial wine to ‘test’ the true bloodline, to prove *my* right! Old King Alaric was merely collateral damage in my ambition! And her,” she spat, glaring at me, “her poisoning was a repeat strategy against a new threat!”

The entire assembly erupted in chaos, a thunderous wave of shock and fury. The truth, in all its brutal, multi-layered horror, had shattered Oakhaven’s carefully constructed peace. Isolde, a woman of cold ambition, had plotted to murder not one, but two Kings, and me, a ceremonial taster, to seize power based on a hidden claim.

As the crowd surged forward, a deafening roar of outrage, Isolde tried to flee. She spun on her heel, pushing through the stunned villagers, desperation etched onto her face. But Liam, with a shout, blocked her path, stepping directly in front of her, his stance firm and unyielding. She stumbled, trapped and exposed before the enraged community, her reign of terror brought to a violent, public end.
