Chapter 10: Five Years Later

The highway diner felt like a pocket of static between two speeding worlds. Outside, eighteen-wheelers roared past. Inside, the smell of burnt coffee and cheap bacon grease clung to the air. Julian sat across from me, picking at a napkin, his shoulders hunched.

“Elena,” he began, his voice barely audible over the clatter of dishes. “Please. Let’s talk. Reasonably.”

He looked up, his eyes bloodshot. He looked like a man who hadn’t slept. For a moment, I almost felt something akin to pity, but it vanished quickly.

“What’s there to talk about, Julian?” I asked, my voice flat. “Your father’s empire is crumbling. Mine is not.”

He flinched. “He’s lost his mind, Elena. He’s furious about the council. He says you tricked them.”

“He tricked himself,” I countered. “He chose rage over honor. You chose fear over loyalty.”

Julian wrung his hands. “He will forgive you. If you just—”

“Return the deed?” I finished for him. “Let him keep the land he stole from my family? The land you helped him steal?”

His head snapped up. “What are you talking about?” The feigned innocence was pathetic.

“The forged power-of-attorney, Julian. Dated four years ago. While I was in the hospital. You brought me the papers to sign, didn’t you? Told me they were to secure my future.”

His face drained of color. He looked like a ghost. “He made me,” he whispered, barely audible. “Father. He said if I didn’t get your signature, he’d disinherit me. He’d cut me off entirely. I had nothing, Elena. Nothing to inherit if I crossed him.”

He leaned across the table, his voice pleading. “I was terrified. He controls everything. My allowance. My position. Everything.”

“So you chose to betray me,” I stated, the words cold and precise. “You watched me sign away my rights, knowing what he intended to do. You stood by while your father hit me. You asked me to kneel and beg for forgiveness for his violence. You were his accomplice, Julian, not his victim.”

Tears welled in his eyes. He reached across the table, attempting to take my hand. “Please, Elena. He’s losing everything. We can start over. Just you and me. Without him. We can have a real family. A good life.”

I pulled my hand back, a sharp, decisive movement. “A good life? With you? You’re a coward, Julian. You sacrificed your wife, your integrity, everything, for fear of losing your father’s money.”

“But he’s gone now!” Julian cried, his voice cracking. “We’re free! We can be together!”

“Our marriage died the moment your father’s fist connected with my face,” I said, my gaze unwavering. “It died the moment you told me to beg. It died four years ago, when you watched me sign away my future while I lay helpless in a hospital bed.”

He stared at me, his mouth agape, as if the reality of my words had just hit him.

“There’s nothing left for us, Julian,” I told him, pushing my chair back. The diner sounds faded, leaving only the echo of his broken pleas.

I left him there, crumbling into himself, amidst the plastic menus and half-empty coffee cups. My marriage was over. It had been over for a very long time.
