Beneath the dusty floorboard, nestled in a shallow cavity, lay a small, tarnished silver locket. It was no bigger than my thumb.
Leo, his eyes wide, carefully pulled it out. The metal was cool against my skin when he handed it to me.
I pressed the small clasp. It sprang open with a faint click.
Inside, a faded, sepia-toned photograph showed a young woman. Her face was strikingly familiar, with Vivian’s sharp cheekbones and piercing gaze.
But her attire was utterly alien: a simple, coarse dress, a plain shawl over her hair, clearly from a much earlier, poorer era. It was a jarring image.
Etched into the back of the locket, in a tiny, almost indecipherable script, was a coded inscription. The unfamiliar characters swirled together like miniature knots.
“It’s Aunt Vivian,” Leo whispered, pointing to the photograph. “But… she looks different.”
I stared at the image, a cold wave of confusion washing over me. This woman was undeniably Vivian, yet she was not the Vivian I knew, the polished billionaire.
