I didn’t answer her smile. Instead, I picked up the voice recorder. Its small, unassuming form felt heavy with the weight of her deceit. Victoria watched me, her expression still composed, a faint air of triumph in her eyes. She clearly believed I had run out of options.

My thumb found the ‘play’ button.

The small speaker crackled, then Garrett Finch’s reedy voice filled the elegant library, tinny but clear.

*“She needed a specific valuation, Mr. Garrick. For the Holbrook Living Trust, specifically the allocation for Toby Garrick.”*

Victoria’s smile faltered. Her eyes darted to the recorder, then back to me, a flicker of irritation, but still, no panic. She probably thought it was an edited snippet, something easily dismissed.

Then, Finch’s voice continued, a hint of desperation in his tone: *“She wanted to know the exact net worth if… if something were to happen to the boy. She asked about the contingencies, how quickly the funds could be redirected for ‘estate management’ or ‘unforeseen family emergencies’ if the primary beneficiary was… unavailable.”*

The color began to drain from Victoria’s face. Her lips, previously pressed into a confident line, now parted slightly.

The recording played on, Finch detailing the $150,000 kickback, the “preliminary valuation” that was anything but preliminary. His voice, now urgent, recounted Victoria’s explicit instructions, her chillingly calm tone as she inquired about the legal ramifications of an “accidental injury.”

*“Her words were, ‘ensure there’s no paper trail leading back to any direct action. Just an unfortunate event.’ She wanted to know the timeline for accessing the $4.2 million and how to ensure her discretion was maintained. The $150,000 was for my silence and for setting up the initial valuations to justify any later asset transfers.”*

The sound of Finch’s voice was like a physical blow to Victoria. Her posture, which had been so rigid and self-assured, seemed to crumple slightly. Her hands, which had been resting casually at her sides, now clenched into tight fists. Her face, usually so composed, was pale, almost translucent in the dim library light.

She moved forward, as if to snatch the recorder, but I pulled it back just out of her reach.

“He’s lying,” she hissed, her voice thin, a tremor running through it. “He’s making it all up. He’s desperate.”

But her eyes told a different story. They darted nervously around the room, no longer meeting mine directly. The conviction that had laced her earlier gaslighting had vanished, replaced by a raw, exposed panic. She had trusted Finch to be discreet, to be loyal, to be silent. And he had betrayed her, utterly.

The recorded voice of her corrupt enabler, detailing her calculated plot, was something she couldn’t simply dismiss as a “child’s overreaction” or “rough play.” This was cold, hard financial evidence, straight from the mouth of someone she had paid to facilitate her crime. The truth, in Finch’s quivering voice, was undeniable.

Her breathing became shallow, rapid. The mask had finally fallen.
