Chapter 6: The Unfinished Reckoning

#content-1

The air in the secluded hospital consultation room felt thick, heavy with unspoken tension. Dr. Sharma had arranged it, a quiet space away from prying eyes. Leon Maxwell had meticulously checked the hidden microphone discreetly sewn into the lapel of my jacket. I could feel the small device pressing against my skin, a constant reminder of the stakes.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my resolve was cold and clear. This was it.

Darius swaggered in a few minutes later, a smirk playing on his lips. He probably thought I’d called him here to plead for a cease-fire, to beg for him to stop twisting the knife. He looked smug, confident in his ability to charm or intimidate.

“Well, well, well,” he began, leaning against the doorframe, crossing his arms. “Look what the cat dragged in. Heard you’ve been causing trouble, Akira. Trying to stir up nonsense with Kendra.”

I met his gaze, refusing to flinch. “I’m here because the nonsense needs to stop, Darius. All of it.”

He chuckled, a hollow, arrogant sound. “Nonsense? You mean your desperate attempts to ruin my life? Because you can’t have children of your own? Pathetic.”

His words, once capable of crushing me, now barely registered. I had shed that skin. “You know I’m not infertile, Darius. And you know why you made me believe I was.”

His eyes narrowed, a flicker of annoyance passing through them. “You always were too smart for your own good. But you’re out of your depth here, kid. You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

I reached into my pocket, pulling out a small digital recorder. My hands trembled slightly, but I forced them steady. “Oh, I think I do. And so does MJ.”

Darius’s smile faltered. His eyes flickered to the device in my hand. “MJ? What are you talking about?”

I pressed play. MJ’s voice, quiet and nervous but clear, filled the small room. He detailed the specific discrepancies in Kendra’s IVF forms. He described the “Approved Genetic Donor” section being overwritten, the original names of the specific anonymous donor bank. Then he laid out the precise steps Darius took to substitute that material with something else, something unique, something from “Dr. Hayes’s experimental samples.”

Darius’s face, which had been pale, now flushed a dark red. He lunged, a desperate, guttural sound escaping his throat. “Give me that! You little witch!”

He grabbed for the recorder, but I pulled back, clutching it tightly. His hand brushed my arm, a moment of physical contact that sent a jolt of fear through me. But I stood my ground.

“Too late, Darius,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, yet ringing with defiance. “This isn’t the only copy. And MJ has already provided his full statement to the authorities.”

He froze, his eyes wide with a chilling mix of panic and rage. His breath came in ragged gasps. He couldn’t process it. His carefully constructed world was crumbling around him.

“And that’s not all,” I continued, pushing past my fear. “Dr. Julian Hayes knows everything, Darius. He knows you stole his genetic material from the trial. He knows you’ve been using his name, his reputation, to attract clients to your black-market schemes.”

Darius stumbled back, his face a mask of utter shock. “Julian? No… no, he wouldn’t. He can’t.”

“He is, Darius,” I confirmed, my voice gaining strength. “He’s already working with Leon Maxwell. He’s pursuing legal action, not just for the genetic material you used for Amara, but for other instances where you’ve exploited his name and his research. He knows about your entire operation.”

Darius’s composure shattered completely. The charming facade crumbled, revealing the raw, furious monster beneath. He let out a primal yell, his eyes blazing with a dangerous madness.

He lunged at me again, not for the recorder this time, but with a terrifying, wild intent in his eyes. He meant to silence me, permanently.

Just as his hands reached for me, the door burst open.

Dr. Sharma and Leon Maxwell were the first through, their faces grim. Behind them, two uniformed hospital security guards, then two men in dark suits who identified themselves as federal agents.

The room filled instantly. Darius froze, caught in the act, his hands still extended towards me, his face contorted in a snarl.

“Darius Dixon,” one of the federal agents stated, his voice calm and authoritative, “you are under arrest for multiple federal charges, including medical fraud, identity theft, and operating an unlicensed medical facility. You have the right to remain silent.”

Darius let out a choked sound, a mixture of disbelief and utter despair. He tried to speak, but no words came out. The agents moved swiftly, cuffing his hands behind his back. He struggled for a moment, then went limp, his shoulders slumping in defeat.

I stood there, trembling, but intact. Dr. Sharma was at my side in an instant, her hand on my arm, her presence a steady anchor. Leon Maxwell gave me a quick, reassuring nod.

The chaos of the arrest swirled around me. Darius, once so formidable, was now just a man being led away, his empire reduced to rubble. I watched him go, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over me. The reckoning was far from over, but the first, crucial battle had been won.
