Chapter 12: The Circle Turns

The studio’s soundstage complex was a labyrinth of echoing corridors and cavernous stages. It was late, well past midnight. The sets for Chloe’s next blockbuster were dark, props shrouded in plastic. The only sounds were the distant hum of ventilation and my own footsteps.

I found Chloe’s dressing room at the end of a long hallway. A star on the door, her name emblazoned in glittering silver. The faint smell of expensive perfume and hairspray clung to the air.

I checked the corridor one last time. Empty.

The lock was a simple key-card mechanism. With a quiet click, I bypassed it. The door swung open silently.

Chloe wasn’t there yet. Perfect.

The room was a testament to her star power and ego. A massive vanity mirror framed by dozens of Hollywood bulbs, overflowing with makeup and skincare. Racks of designer clothes, still smelling of the wardrobe department’s steam. A plush velvet chaise lounge.

I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. The heavy silence of the soundstage felt amplified in the small, opulent space.

I chose a seat on the chaise lounge, placing my small, encrypted tablet on the glass coffee table in front of me. On its screen, the digital invoice glowed faintly.

My heart hammered, a steady, rhythmic drum against my ribs. This wasn’t about public shaming. This wasn’t about legal battles in court. This was about a private, unvarnished confrontation. Just her and me.

A few minutes later, I heard footsteps approaching, accompanied by the distinct jingling of keys. The door clicked, then swung open.

Chloe stepped in, already loosening her scarf. She stopped dead when she saw me.

Her eyes, usually so calculating, widened with genuine surprise. Her perfectly coiffed hair seemed to stiffen. She clutched her handbag tighter.

“Maya?” she said, her voice a low, disbelieving whisper. “What in God’s name are you doing here?”

She glanced around the room, as if expecting to find someone else. An audience. A camera crew.

“Waiting for you,” I replied, my voice calm, belying the storm inside me.

She composed herself quickly, a practiced mask falling into place. A subtle narrowing of her eyes. “This is private property, Maya. You’re trespassing.”

“Am I?” I leaned forward slightly, gesturing to the tablet. “Or am I just visiting a family member who has been trying to poison me for the last three weeks?”

Chloe’s face went utterly blank. Every muscle in her jaw tightened. The blood drained from her face, leaving her pale beneath her expertly applied makeup.

She looked at the tablet, then at me. Her mouth opened, then closed. No witty retort. No immediate pivot. For once, she was speechless.

“I have the invoice, Chloe,” I stated, keeping my voice even. “The custom formulation. The order placed by you. The billing address of the penthouse. The exact chemical signature matching the sedative found in Barnaby.”

I paused, letting the words sink in. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by my own breathing.

“And,” I added softly, “the matching symptoms of a person who has been consuming it unknowingly, nightly, in their warm milk.”

Her eyes flickered, betraying a deep, visceral fear. She took a half-step back, her hand instinctively going to her throat. The casual elegance of her dressing room suddenly felt like a cage.

The tables had turned. And she knew it.
