Chapter 6: The Unmasking Begins

#content-1

The email arrived late Tuesday morning, a single, stark notification in my inbox. The subject line read: “Case #2023-771: DNA Paternity Results.”

My hands trembled so violently I almost dropped my phone. Every muscle in my body seized. This was it. The definitive answer. The evidence that would either secure Lily’s future or plunge us into an even deeper, more complex fight.

I took a shaky breath, forcing myself to exhale slowly, then opened the attachment. The PDF loaded, crisp and official, emblazoned with the lab’s logo. My eyes darted to the bolded conclusion.

“CONCLUSION: Genetic analysis of Sample A (Child: Lily Kincaid, provided by guardian Elara Reed) and Sample B (Alleged Father: Julian Kincaid, provided as undisclosed biological material) definitively *excludes* Julian Kincaid as the biological father of Lily Kincaid. The probability of paternity is 0.00%.”

Zero. Point. Zero. Zero. Percent.

A wave of dizzying relief washed over me, so potent it almost buckled my knees. It was true. My gut instinct, Lily’s innocent words, Eleanor’s family secret—all of it confirmed by cold, irrefutable science. Julian Kincaid was *not* Lily’s father.

Then, the relief twisted into a searing, righteous anger. How dare they? How dare Julian and Leo attempt such a monstrous deceit, risking Lily’s entire future for their own greed? The full extent of their calculated cruelty hit me with renewed force.

I held the phone tight, the edges digging into my palm. This wasn’t just proof; it was a weapon. The most powerful weapon I could wield against their insidious scheme.

Just as I was trying to process the flood of emotions, a news alert flashed across my phone screen, stealing my attention. The headline, stark and bold, sent a fresh jolt of adrenaline through me:

“Kincaid & Shaw to Host Impromptu Press Conference: Major Personal Announcement Expected Tomorrow Morning.”

Julian and Leo. Tomorrow morning. “Major personal announcement regarding Julian’s new family role.”

My breath hitched. They were going to do it. They were going to make their fraudulent claim public. They were going to try and solidify Julian’s “paternal figure” status, believing they had me cornered, outmaneuvered.

The timing couldn’t be a coincidence. My DNA results had just arrived, and now they were making their move. They clearly had no idea I held the very evidence that would shatter their entire plan.

The race against time had officially begun.

I immediately called Arthur. He answered on the second ring, his voice calm.

“Arthur, it’s Elara. The results are in. Julian is unequivocally *not* Lily’s biological father. Zero percent.”

A brief silence on the other end, then a quiet exhale. “Excellent. That’s precisely what we needed. Congratulations, Elara.”

“But there’s more,” I pressed, my words tumbling out quickly. “Julian and Leo are holding a press conference tomorrow morning. ‘Major personal announcement.’ It has to be about Lily. They’re making their move.”

“Tomorrow morning?” Arthur repeated, a note of urgency now in his voice. “That’s aggressive. They must feel very confident.”

“They have no idea what I know,” I countered, a grim determination setting in. “But we have to act fast. We can’t let them establish this lie publicly. How quickly can we get these results officially recognized by a court? Or present them?”

“We’ll need to move heaven and earth,” Arthur said. “I’ll contact the court immediately. We can file an emergency motion, but getting a judge to hear it and issue an order before their press conference… it’s tight. Very tight.”

“What about Eleanor’s information?” I asked. “The birthmark? Could that help somehow?”

“It’s corroborating, but not definitive in a court of law without sworn testimony,” Arthur explained. “The DNA is the hammer. But the timing is the issue.”

My mind raced. A public lie required a public truth. A dramatic, irrefutable counter-move.

“Arthur,” I said, a new idea forming. “What if we don’t just file an emergency motion? What if we bring the truth to *their* stage?”

Arthur paused. “You’re talking about a public counter-announcement?”

“More than that,” I clarified. “We have the truth. We need to deliver it at the precise moment they attempt to solidify their lie. We need to turn their press conference into their downfall.”

“That would be a high-stakes play,” Arthur warned, though I could hear a flicker of intrigue in his voice. “Very risky. But potentially devastating to their plans.”

“I have Eleanor,” I reminded him. “She’s sharp. She’s articulate. And she’s beyond reproach. Julian and Leo would never see it coming from her.”

“A matriarchal intervention,” Arthur mused. “That certainly has a certain dramatic appeal. And it would catch them entirely off guard.”

“Exactly,” I said, feeling a surge of adrenaline. “They’re expecting me to fight them in court. Not to unveil their deceit live, on their own stage.”

“Alright, Elara,” Arthur conceded. “It’s audacious, but it just might work. I’ll prepare the necessary court filings anyway, to have them ready. And I’ll work on making sure these lab results are immediately court-certified, so they hold full legal weight when presented publicly.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said, my voice filled with a fierce resolve. The fear was still there, but now it was overshadowed by a burning desire for justice.

The press conference was tomorrow. I had less than twenty-four hours to prepare for the biggest, most important performance of my life. Not as an actress, but as a mother protecting her child.

The game had indeed begun, and I was ready to play.
