The boardroom was a tomb, its polished surfaces reflecting the stunned faces of the trustees. Julian stood rigid, his breath coming in shallow gasps. Evelyn’s testimony had landed like a thunderclap.

“Nurse Holloway,” Mr. Harrison said, his voice clipped, “do you have the evidence you mentioned?”

I nodded, my fingers tightening on the small module. Barnaby shifted, a soft growl rumbling in his chest, sensing the room’s electric tension.

“Yes, Mr. Harrison. I have it right here.” I held up the device. “It contains Dr. Kincaid’s explicit instructions for the attack in the garage.”

Julian found his voice, high and thin. “It’s a doctored recording! She’s clearly unstable! You can’t trust anything she says or produces!”

“The device was ripped directly from the assailant’s chest during the attack,” I countered, my voice clear and unwavering. “Barnaby did it.”

I looked at the board members, one by one. Their faces showed a mix of disbelief, horror, and dawning understanding.

I spotted an audio input jack on the conference table. Without hesitation, I plugged the module in. A low hum filled the room.

“This is not doctored,” I said, my voice resonating with conviction. “This is Julian Kincaid, giving orders.”

I pressed ‘play.’

The first sound was the distinct scuff of shoes on concrete. Then the low, guttural growls of the pitbulls. A sharp intake of breath from one of the board members.

And then, Julian’s voice.

“…and remember, Darren. No witnesses. Make it look like a tragic accident.”

His voice, cold and detached, echoed through the speaker system, filling every corner of the room. The casual cruelty of his tone was amplified, undeniable.

“The keys are secondary, the trust fund access is what matters.”

A collective shudder went through the room. Julian himself looked like he’d been struck. His face was ashen, his eyes wide and vacant. The polite façade he’d worn for decades, his carefully cultivated image as a respected hospital administrator, shattered into a million pieces.

He moved, almost imperceptibly, taking a half-step forward. “Clara,” he whispered, his voice hoarse, desperate. “Clara, please, turn it off.”

But I didn’t. The recording continued, detailing his precise, chilling instructions, leaving nothing to interpretation. The mercenary’s grunts, the dogs’ snarls, all intertwined with Julian’s calm, orchestrating tone.

Finally, I pressed stop. The abrupt silence that followed was deafening. No one spoke. No one moved.

Mr. Harrison stared at Julian, his jaw clenched. “Dr. Kincaid,” he said, his voice dangerously low, “do you have *any* explanation for this?”

Julian stood there, a broken man. The color had drained from his face, leaving it a sickly gray. His eyes darted around, searching for an escape, for an ally, but found none. The board members looked at him with a mixture of disgust and betrayal.

Then, he did something unexpected. He took another step toward me, his voice barely a whisper, meant only for my ears.

“Clara,” he pleaded, desperation etched on his face. “We can settle this. Quietly. For the sake of the hospital’s reputation. And yours. I’ll give you two million dollars. Right now. Just… make this go away.”

His eyes were filled with a raw, panicked urgency. He thought he could still buy his way out. He thought he could buy my silence.

The irony was sickening. He tried to have me incapacitated, financially ruined, and now, with the evidence against him overwhelming, he was offering to buy me off with a fraction of what was mine.

My blood ran cold with indignation. This wasn’t about money for me. This was about justice. About the years of gaslighting, the manipulation of my recovery, the attempted murder.

I looked at his desperate face, then back at the board, then at Evelyn, who stood firm and steady. There was no going back.
