Chapter 9: A Long Time Later

Armed with Liam’s evidence, I moved with quiet determination. My next step was clear: a direct confrontation with Eleanor Finch.

I spent hours preparing, poring over the memo, Liam’s spreadsheet, and even Daniel’s desperate texts to me. I wanted every piece of the puzzle to fit perfectly, leaving Eleanor no room to maneuver. Vance’s testimony, secured through discreet means, corroborated Daniel’s initial story about the fixer’s unexpected arrival, though Vance naturally omitted his own overconfidence and Liam’s warning.

I arranged a meeting with Eleanor through her executive assistant, Liam. The irony was not lost on me. Liam, who had helped me build the case against his boss, was now facilitating the very confrontation that would bring her down. He was a silent accomplice, a man caught between fear and conscience.

The meeting was set for a private conference room at Horizon Innovations, far from the prying eyes of her main office. Eleanor, I knew, preferred to handle “sensitive matters” behind closed doors.

When I arrived, Eleanor was already seated at the head of a long, polished mahogany table. She was impeccably dressed, her posture regal, a serene smile on her face that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She looked every inch the powerful, unassailable CEO. She offered me a glass of water, her movements graceful.

“Mr. Caldwell,” she began, her voice smooth and calm. “Thank you for coming. Daniel has informed me of your… concerns.”

“Concerns, Ms. Finch, is an understatement,” I replied, my voice steady, meeting her gaze directly. I placed my briefcase on the table, not opening it yet. “My granddaughter was drugged, and my son is facing ruin, all because of your illegal corporate activities.”

Her smile didn’t falter. “I understand you’re upset. Daniel is a valued employee, and naturally, when a sensitive situation arises, emotions can run high. But I assure you, my company operates with the utmost integrity. And the incident with Maya, while regrettable, was a matter of Daniel’s personal judgment.”

“His personal judgment, or your explicit directives?” I challenged.

She steepled her fingers, her gaze unwavering. “Mr. Caldwell, I believe there’s a misunderstanding. I was simply informed of a need to secure certain internal documents. Daniel was tasked with this. Any actions he took regarding his personal family matters are entirely his own responsibility.”

“You orchestrated the financial leverage that trapped him, Ms. Finch,” I stated, watching her carefully for any flicker of reaction. “Phoenix Holdings. The predatory loans. You own him, lock, stock, and barrel.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, a subtle shift. “Business is business, Mr. Caldwell. Daniel entered into those agreements voluntarily. He sought out our investment opportunities. He was aware of the risks and the rewards.”

“Risks like losing everything if he didn’t do your bidding?” I pressed. “Rewards like making an eight-year-old child ingest a sedative to cover up your crimes?”

A long silence stretched between us. Her composure, though still formidable, seemed to waver for a fraction of a second. She took a slow breath.

“I admit,” she said, her voice dropping, almost a purr. “I placed significant pressure on Daniel to ensure company assets were protected. The internal audit was a serious matter. I needed the evidence of certain… ‘redundant assets’ handled. He was in a difficult position. And yes, I offered him a path to financial recovery if he performed this task diligently.”

She leaned forward slightly, her voice laced with a practiced sincerity. “But I assure you, I had no knowledge of his chosen methods regarding Maya. His note to you, ‘don’t believe anything she says about the wardrobe,’ suggests he was trying to hide a personal mistake, not a corporate directive. He’s a grown man, Mr. Caldwell. He made a poor decision under pressure. A terrible decision, I grant you. But that was his choice, his poor judgment, not mine.”

It was a perfectly executed blame shift. She admitted to the coercion, to the pressure, even to demanding the “asset disposal,” but skillfully distanced herself from the sedation itself. She painted Daniel as the solely culpable party for escalating the situation, a desperate father making a catastrophic error, absolving herself of direct responsibility for Maya’s harm.

“So you believe Daniel acted entirely on his own volition when he sedated Maya?” I asked, my voice calm, but my blood ran cold.

“I believe he panicked,” she stated, her gaze hard. “He was afraid of disappointing me, afraid of the consequences of failing to secure the assets. He took an extreme measure without my knowledge or approval.”

She sat back, a ghost of her serene smile returning. She looked confident, as if she had successfully navigated the immediate storm. She thought she had me. She believed she had shifted all culpability onto Daniel, positioning herself as a stern but ultimately blameless executive whose subordinate made a grave error.

But I had more. I had the specific details that would pierce through her carefully constructed façade. I had the means to prove her direct involvement, not just in the scheme, but in the immediate decision that put Maya at risk. Eleanor thought she held all the strings, pulling Daniel’s fate. But she hadn’t accounted for Liam’s conscience, or my resolve. The real reckoning was about to begin. Could I truly break her without destroying my son in the process, or would she find another way to twist the truth, to escape the consequences of her actions?
