Chapter 7: A Lifeline from Pastor Thorne

#content-1

The next day, still reeling from Aunt Bea’s revelation, Evelyn made a quick trip to the Cedar Creek market. She rounded an aisle and nearly collided with Pastor Elias Thorne, the revered leader of the town’s largest church.

“Evelyn,” he said, his expression grave but kind. He held a small basket of fresh produce. “I was just thinking of you.”

Evelyn felt a blush creep up her neck. She knew the gossip about her was rampant, even within the church.

“Pastor,” she managed.

He looked around, then lowered his voice. “I want you to know, Evelyn, that my prayers are with you. I know this is a deeply difficult time.” He gave her a long, searching look. “The Lord sees all. And truth, in His time, has a way of coming to light.”

Evelyn felt a flicker of warmth, a small sense of validation she hadn’t realized she was so desperately craving.

“I appreciate that, Pastor,” she said, her voice soft.

He hesitated, then added, “Be careful, Evelyn. The Cheneys… their roots run deep in this community. Sometimes, peace must be bought with patience, even when justice feels delayed.”

He offered her a small, compassionate smile before moving on, leaving Evelyn with a renewed, albeit cautious, sense of hope. His words were a warning, yes, but also a quiet acknowledgment that she wasn’t entirely alone in her struggle.

Can Pastor Thorne’s moral compass truly guide the community towards the truth, or will his desire for harmony keep him from taking a direct stand against the powerful Cheney family?
