When an Army Medical Corps Colonel returns to North Carolina after her estranged husband assaults her 75-year-old mother over a $4 million clinic, military brass and underworld bosses collide.
The silence in the clinic was so profound you could hear the soft whir of the old air conditioner. Travis, his face pale, stared at Major Thompson as if she were a ghost. Sheriff Garland, usually so imposing, looked like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
“Colonel Turner,” Major Thompson said, stepping further into the room, her eyes briefly flicking to Travis and Sheriff Garland before returning to me. “We’ve reviewed the documents.”
I retrieved the heavy canvas bag from my feet, pulling out the certified copies of the 1984 lease with the reversion clause and the strongbox containing my father’s old ledgers.
“Major,” I said, placing the documents on the desk. “This is the original 1984 municipal lease, showing the expired reversion clause that invalidates any claim by Cain Medical Properties.” I gestured to the highlighted section. “And these are my late father’s medical ledgers. They detail how Wade Cain systematically coerced and intimidated local doctors, including my father and Dr. Peterson, to facilitate the original land acquisition.”
Major Thompson picked up the lease, her eyes quickly scanning the highlighted clause. She then opened the ledgers, her brows furrowing as she read my father’s meticulous entries detailing the threats and smear campaigns.
Travis found his voice, a high-pitched squeak. “What is this? This is a local matter! You have no jurisdiction here!”
Major Thompson didn’t even look at him. She closed the ledger, her expression grim. “Colonel Turner is an active battalion commander in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Any attempts to defraud her family, or to illegally seize property that is rightfully theirs, especially through the use of fraudulent documents and intimidation, constitutes a serious federal offense.”
She turned to Sheriff Garland, her voice losing its polite tone. “Sheriff Garland, your presence here, and your apparent complicity in these actions, suggests a potential violation of federal law, including obstruction of justice and aiding in fraud against a military officer. We are opening an immediate investigation into federal land fraud and illegal intimidation.”
Garland stammered, his face red. “I’m just doing my job! Following court orders!”
“These ‘court orders’ appear to be based on fraudulent claims,” Major Thompson countered, her gaze unwavering. “Our JAG Corps attorneys will be reviewing every document, every filing. And we will be speaking with every patient, every witness here today, regarding any intimidation they may have experienced.”
The two military police officers, who had been standing silently by the door, moved forward, their presence radiating quiet authority. They stood between Travis, Garland, and the clinic entrance, subtly blocking any easy exit.
Travis started to sweat, his bravado completely gone. “This is ridiculous! My father owns half this county!”
“Your father’s holdings, Mr. Cain, will also be subject to scrutiny,” Major Thompson said, her voice chillingly calm. “Especially any connections to this property or any other land deals initiated in 1984.”
The implications of her words hung heavy in the air. This wasn’t just a clinic dispute anymore. This was a federal investigation, touching on decades-old land deals and the criminal machinations of Wade Cain. And it had been triggered by Travis’s clumsy greed. The syndicate’s dirty laundry was about to be aired, and I had just handed them the soap.
