Chapter 21: A Year Later, A New Burden

The lawyer’s letters lay like grim prophecies on my desk, a stark reminder of Marcus’s power and his willingness to use it against me. The weight of his threats, especially those aimed at Simone’s reputation, felt suffocating. I knew I couldn’t carry this burden alone any longer.

I called Jem, my voice tight. “Can you meet me? Garage, same time?”

He arrived promptly, his usual cheerful demeanor subdued by the urgency in my voice. I handed him the letters, watching his face as he read the intimidating legal jargon. His jaw tightened, and a muscle twitched in his cheek.

“He’s really going there?” Jem asked, his voice incredulous. “Threatening his own daughter with lawsuits?”

“He said it was to protect Mom’s reputation,” I explained, the words tasting bitter. “And the family name.”

Jem scoffed, crumpling one of the letters in his hand. The paper, crisp and authoritative moments before, now looked fragile and insignificant.

“That’s just gaslighting, Nia,” he declared, his eyes blazing with indignation. “He’s trying to scare you off because you’re close to blowing up his whole empire. This just proves you’re onto something big.”

His anger, so raw and immediate, was a balm to my own fear. It confirmed that my instincts were right, that I wasn’t being paranoid or reckless. It was a mundane but specific act of loyalty, Jem’s unwavering support in the face of such clear intimidation, that strengthened my resolve.

“So, what do we do?” I asked, looking at him, a flicker of hope rekindling inside me. “He basically told me to back off or he’d ruin Mom. I can’t let that happen.”

Jem walked over to a whiteboard he used for sketching out coding projects, grabbing a marker.

“He wants you to back off because he knows you have evidence,” Jem reasoned, tapping the board. “But maybe we don’t have *all* the evidence. Think about Raymond Cross.”

He wrote Raymond’s name in bold letters.

“He was Marcus’s original partner,” Jem continued, turning to me. “The one Marcus forced out. He was a victim, right? What if he tried to fight back? What if he left something behind, something we missed?”

A spark ignited in my mind. “Like what?”

“Maybe he tried to warn someone,” Jem suggested, pacing the small garage. “Or left a hidden message. Did he have family here? Any old friends who might still have something of his?”

“I don’t think so,” I replied, racking my brain. “He left Havenwood pretty abruptly. But Mom knew him, remember? They were acquaintances from church.”

“Okay,” Jem said, his eyes gleaming with renewed purpose. “So, plan A: we revisit the storage unit. Maybe there’s a smaller compartment, a hidden document you missed under pressure.”

He pointed to the bagged burner phone, still sitting on the workbench.

“And plan B: you discreetly search your house for anything, *anything*, Raymond Cross might have left behind,” he instructed. “Old letters, documents, anything that might have his name on it. Marcus wouldn’t expect you to look there.”

His confidence was infectious. For the first time since Marcus’s chilling confrontation, I felt a surge of determination. I wouldn’t let my father intimidate me into silence. Not when Raymond Cross had suffered, and not when my mother’s peace was so intricately tied to the very truth Marcus sought to bury.

“He’s trying to isolate you,” Jem said, his hand resting briefly on my shoulder. “But you’re not alone. We’ll find something. We have to.”

I nodded, the legal letters now just a discarded threat in my mind. The next move was clear.
