Chapter 7: Sofia’s Digital Hunt

#content-1

The “Notice of Intent to Vacate” had plunged the bakery into a somber silence. My parents moved about their tasks like ghosts, their usual cheerful chatter replaced by quiet resignation. Marco, meanwhile, was even more evasive, frequently taking calls in hushed tones and disappearing for hours at a time, always with his tablet clutched tightly in his hand.

The thirty-day deadline felt like an axe hanging over our heads.

I knew I couldn’t confront him again, not with my parents so clearly swayed by his narrative.

I needed irrefutable proof, something that would not only expose his lies but also reveal the full extent of his dangerous connections.

Sofia, sensing the urgency, had thrown herself into the cause with a fierce determination. She spent hours holed up in her room, hunched over her laptop, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

She had a natural intuition for technology, a digital detective’s mind that far surpassed my own.

One evening, after Marco had left for one of his mysterious “meetings,” Sofia emerged from her room, her eyes bright with a mixture of exhaustion and triumph.

“Mom,” she said, her voice trembling slightly with excitement.

“I think I found something.”

I rushed to her side, my heart leaping with a sudden surge of hope.

She led me back to her room, where her laptop screen glowed with a complex web of windows and unfamiliar code.

“It took forever,” she explained, gesturing to the screen.

“His tablet security was tough, but I managed to bypass it, just enough to get some access.”

My tech-savvy daughter had done what I couldn’t even dream of.

“I was looking for anything related to ‘El Halcón’ or the developer, Silas Croft,” she continued, her finger tracing lines on the screen.

“And then I found this.”

She pointed to a browser window, displaying a social media profile.

It wasn’t Facebook or Instagram, but a lesser-known platform, more obscure, designed for a certain kind of anonymity.

“It’s a burner account,” she explained, her voice hushed.

“Not linked to his real name, no personal photos. But I recognized his messaging style, and then I cross-referenced some metadata.”

My mind reeled. A burner account. Marco had a completely hidden online identity.

“And look who he’s been communicating with,” she said, scrolling down.

There, in the private messages, was a conversation thread with a profile clearly belonging to Silas Croft.

The same Silas Croft, the developer’s public face.

My breath caught in my throat. This was huge.

“They’re not just communicating,” Sofia added, her eyes wide.

“They’re talking like old friends. Like collaborators.”

The messages were coded, full of slang and oblique references, but the underlying tone was clear: a disturbing closeness, a shared understanding of a covert operation.

“See here?” she pointed to a particularly cryptic exchange.

“Croft says, ‘Halcón’s terms for the new delivery are tight.’ And Marco replies, ‘He’s always got a sharp beak. Just gotta make sure the prey is ready for the plucking’.”

The chilling imagery of “Halcón’s sharp beak” and “prey ready for plucking” made me shudder.

It was a cold, brutal assessment of our situation.

And Marco was using it to describe our family, our bakery.

The personal cruelty of his words, the casual dehumanization of my parents’ life’s work, was a bitter sting. He saw them not as family, but as “prey.”

“So they’ve been working together this whole time,” I whispered, the realization a punch to the gut.

“Croft isn’t just a legitimate developer. He’s Marco’s pawn, connected to El Halcón.”

Sofia nodded gravely.

“And Marco isn’t just protecting our parents. He’s directing the attack.”

She scrolled further, showing more fragments of their conversation.

“Marco mentions ‘softening the target’ and ‘prepping the ground’ for the final approach,” she said, pointing to another message.

“It’s like they’re talking about a military operation, not a business deal.”

The evidence was undeniable, staring at me from the screen.

Marco wasn’t just misleading us; he was actively, deliberately working with the enemy, even using their brutal terminology.

He was the orchestrator, the puppet master, pulling every string.

“This changes everything,” I murmured, my voice hoarse.

“This is not just about money anymore.”

This was about calculated, premeditated destruction.

Sofia had not only found the burner account; she had unveiled Marco’s true, sinister relationship with Silas Croft, confirming their collaboration and shared involvement with “El Halcón.”

“We have to show this to Mama and Papa,” I said, my mind already racing.

“They have to see this. They have to know.”

Sofia hesitated, a worried frown on her face.

“Mom, Marco deletes these messages really fast. He’s super careful. What if he finds out I got in?”

Her question was a valid concern. Marco was cunning; he would cover his tracks.

“We have to be smart about this,” I agreed, a plan already forming in my mind.

“We copy everything. We make sure we have undeniable proof.”

The laptop screen glowed, a beacon in the darkened room, revealing the hidden depths of my brother’s betrayal.

The clock was ticking, the thirty-day deadline looming large.

But now, we had a weapon.

A digital weapon, forged by my daughter’s clever hands.
