Chapter 9: A Seed of Calm

Despite the chaos erupting outside, Marcus Albright’s office on the executive floor was eerily quiet.

The air inside felt thick, heavy with the scent of expensive wood polish and desperation.

He was there, pacing back and forth like a caged animal, the blinds drawn against the harsh light of the city and the prying eyes of the media.

I found him with surprising ease.

The security staff had abandoned their posts, perhaps already aware of the writing on the wall.

Or perhaps they had simply been ‘reassigned.’

He was on his phone, yelling into it, his face pale and slick with sweat.

“I need more time!” he roared, his voice cracking.

“The assets are still liquid! Just a few more days, then I can pull everything out!”

He slammed the phone down, then ran a hand through his perfectly coiffed hair, now disheveled.

He didn’t notice me at first.

“Marcus,” I said, my voice cutting through his private panic.

He spun around, eyes wide, fear warring with a flicker of his usual arrogance when he recognized me.

“Jensen? What the hell are you doing here? Get out!” he hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me.

I walked further into the room, past the sprawling mahogany desk, until I stood directly across from him.

“I think you know why I’m here,” I said, my voice steady, betraying none of the fear that was churning in my stomach.

I held up the genuine medical records for Elena Hayes, Anya’s encrypted email proof still glowing faintly on the screen of my personal tablet.

“This is Elena’s real medical history,” I stated, my voice clear and deliberate.

“No cognitive decline. No ‘violent outbursts.’ Just a grieving widow, Marcus. And this,” I added, placing a printed copy of Silas Finch’s undervalued appraisal report onto his desk, “this is Finch’s fraudulent work, meant to facilitate your grand scheme.”

His eyes darted from the documents to my face, a dangerous glint replacing the fear.

“You really think you’re clever, don’t you, Jensen?” he sneered, regaining some of his composure.

“A data analyst, playing detective? You have no idea who you’re dealing with. This is my empire. You’re a cog. A disposable, insignificant cog.”

He stepped closer, his shadow falling over me.

“You think a few newspaper articles and some doctored reports are going to bring me down?” he chuckled, a cold, humorless sound.

“I have contingencies. Ways to make problems disappear. And you, Jensen, are a very big problem.”

He reached for a hidden drawer in his desk, his eyes fixed on me, a chilling promise of retaliation in their depths.

My heart hammered, but I stood my ground.

I had come too far.

Just as his fingers brushed the elegant wood of the drawer, his personal phone, sitting on the desk beside Finch’s appraisal, began to vibrate with a low, insistent hum.

He glanced at it, annoyance flaring in his eyes, but then he saw the caller ID.

His face drained of all color.

The arrogance vanished, replaced by pure, unadulterated terror.

He stared at the screen, paralyzed, a choked sound escaping his lips.

It was Victor Petrov.

The door to Marcus’s office burst open, slamming against the wall with a sickening thud.

Victor “Viper” Petrov stood in the doorway, his hulking frame filling the space, two equally menacing enforcers flanking him.

Petrov’s eyes, cold and devoid of emotion, swept past me as if I were invisible.

They fixed on Marcus, who now stood utterly motionless, trembling violently.

“Marcus Albright,” Petrov stated, his voice a low, gravelly rumble, utterly calm, yet filled with an undeniable threat.

“Your empire’s costing us too much. You’re done.”

Marcus stammered, trying to find words.

“V-Viper, please. I can fix this. Just a little more time, the funds are almost out, I swear—”

Petrov took two steps into the room.

His gaze never wavered from Marcus’s terrified face.

“You jeopardized our operations,” Petrov interrupted, his voice like ice.

“Exposed our investments. That is unacceptable.”

One of the enforcers moved, grabbing Marcus by the arm, twisting it behind his back with brutal efficiency.

Marcus cried out, a pathetic, strangled sound, as the second enforcer seized his other arm.

He was half-dragged, half-carried towards the door.

“No! Wait! Jensen!” Marcus shrieked, his eyes wide with a desperate plea towards me, as if I could save him from this unseen, unimaginable fate.

But Petrov didn’t even glance my way.

His focus remained entirely on Marcus.

“Consider this a necessary adjustment,” Petrov said, almost to himself, as Marcus was pulled through the doorway, his final, pathetic screams echoing down the otherwise silent hallway.

The door swung shut with a soft click, leaving me alone in the luxurious office.

The scent of panic still hung in the air.

Silence.

Complete, utter silence.

The confrontation I had imagined, the satisfying reckoning where I laid out his crimes and watched him crumble, was brutally cut short.

Justice, in this moment, had taken a swift, violent, and deeply unsettling turn.

I stood there, trembling, the weight of the forged medical report still heavy in my hand, as the true, chilling nature of Marcus Albright’s downfall settled around me.
