Chapter 7: The Kitchen Confrontation

#content-1

Late that night, Eleanor couldn’t sleep. The thought of Elias manipulating Leo’s medical records, and now sending fake emails to his school, churned in her mind. She crept downstairs for a glass of water, only to find Elias in the sprawling, gourmet kitchen. He sat at the polished granite island, casually swirling a snifter of amber liquid, the faint scent of expensive brandy filling the quiet room.

He looked up as she entered, a mild, almost serene expression on his face.

“Can’t sleep, dear?” he asked, his voice soft, almost sympathetic.

Eleanor walked to the island, gripping its cool surface. “Elias, what you’re doing with Leo’s records… with those emails… it’s beyond cruel. It’s hurting him.”

He took a slow sip of his brandy, his eyes calm, unwavering. “Hurting him? Eleanor, I’m trying to protect him from *your* erratic behavior. You’re convinced there’s some grand conspiracy, some scheme against you. It’s not healthy.”

“There *is* a scheme, Elias. You’re trying to steal from the charity. You bought land with those funds. You’re changing records to make me look insane.” Her voice rose with her frustration.

He set his snifter down with a gentle click. “You’re seeing things, Eleanor. Plots where there are none. Your imagination is running wild. First the gala, then the clinic, now a land deal. It’s all connected in your mind, isn’t it?”

He shook his head slowly, a look of profound pity on his face. “Your attempts to ‘undermine’ me are only hurting Leo, by creating an unstable home environment. He needs consistency. He needs a calm, rational parent.”

He paused, letting his words hang in the air. “I’m trying to ensure he has one.”

Eleanor felt a wave of dizziness. His calm, controlled demeanor was a weapon, deflecting every truth, twisting every accusation back onto her. She looked at his impassive face, knowing her words were useless, feeling the insidious tendrils of doubt begin to creep into her own mind. He was a master, and the conversation was a chilling display of psychological manipulation.
