News of Evelyn’s frozen benefits spread through town with the speed of wildfire. Neighbors who had once courted her now gave her wide berth. Her carefully constructed facade of prosperity began to crumble almost immediately.

The annual wartime scrap drive at the parish hall was scheduled for that Saturday. Evelyn, ever the social climber, had insisted on running the collection of metal and rubber donations. It was her last attempt to project an image of patriotic contribution, to cling to some shred of respectability.

I hesitated about attending. I didn’t want to gloat, but I felt a pull to witness the end of her cruel reign. I needed to see justice delivered, not through violence or a shouting match, but through the quiet, understated force of the law.

The parish hall was bustling. Bunting draped from the rafters, and the air buzzed with cheerful chatter and the clang of donated pots and pans. Children ran around, laughing, while adults sorted through piles of scrap metal. Evelyn stood at the main collection table, dressed impeccably, a forced smile plastered on her face as she collected donations, a small brass collection tin in her hand.

I stood near the back, observing. Suddenly, two men in dark suits, federal agents I recognized from Mr. Davies’ office, walked purposefully towards Evelyn. The room’s cheerful hum didn’t falter, but a ripple of nervous energy went through a few onlookers who recognized the agents.

They approached Evelyn’s table. One of the agents, a tall man with a stern face, quietly extended a folded document towards her. It was a federal summons.

Evelyn’s smile vanished. Her eyes darted from the paper to the agent’s impassive face, then to the collection of townspeople. Her carefully arranged hair seemed to deflate, her shoulders slumping. Her hand, clutching the brass collection tin, began to tremble.

She fumbled the summons, her fingers stiff. “What… what is this?” Her voice was barely a whisper, a stark contrast to her earlier shrieks.

The agent spoke in a low, even tone, audible only to her and a few close listeners. “Federal summons, Mrs. DuBose. Regarding the misappropriation of military funds and welfare fraud. You are required to appear.”

Her face went ashen. The brass collection tin slipped from her grasp, clattering loudly on the wooden floor. Copper pennies and nickels spilled out, scattering across the polished planks like tiny, mocking eyes. A few nearby children stopped their play, looking at the spilled coins.

Evelyn made a small, choked sound. She bent to pick up the fallen tin, her movements awkward and stiff, as if her limbs had suddenly forgotten how to work.

“I… I apologize,” she stammered, her voice cracking. “I… I just remembered I have… an urgent engagement.”

She didn’t look at anyone, not even the agents. Her gaze was fixed on the floor. With a final, mortified glance at the spilled coins, she turned and moved towards the exit, her once-proud gait now a hurried, hunched shuffle. She disappeared silently into the November chill, leaving the cheerful scrap drive to continue without her, the quiet humiliation a far more potent and public punishment than any shouted accusation could have been. The war effort, ironically, continued without her “contributions.”
