Chapter 7: The Trap Tightens

#content-1

Julian wasn’t finished. His smear campaign escalated, moving beyond mere whispers. A local D.C. political blog, known for its unattributed leaks, published a short, venomous piece that morning.

“Sources close to the De Witt campaign,” the article read, “hint at grave financial irregularities and compliance oversight issues from a recently departed senior staff member. The campaign assures donors that a full audit is underway to address these *unspecified problems*.”

It didn’t name me, but it didn’t have to. Everyone in D.C. knew I was the “recently departed senior staff member.” It was a direct hit, designed to make me untouchable in the political sphere.

Then, the second blow. I tried to pay for coffee with my personal debit card. It was declined. I tried my credit card. Declined.

I called my bank. The automated system stated, “Your accounts are temporarily frozen pending review for suspected corporate malfeasance.” Twist 8.

Julian wasn’t just isolating me from his campaign; he was attacking my personal finances. He wanted to drain me, financially and emotionally, to force me into submission. He assumed I was trying to sue him, to extract a civil settlement, and was reacting with overwhelming force. He wanted to make me sign that “bookkeeping errors” document, knowing a frozen bank account would eventually break anyone.

He thought he was making me desperate. He thought he was cornering me. But he had no idea of the true nature of the money he was playing with, or the proof I now held. His strategy was based on a fundamental misunderstanding of my leverage.

The phone vibrated in my hand. It was a reply to my coded message. A single word: “Tomorrow. Nine. Steakhouse. Alexandria.”

My off-grid contact had come through. Victor Moretti had agreed to meet.

I closed my eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. Julian’s pressure was immense, designed to induce panic. But panic was a luxury I couldn’t afford. The trap was tightening around me, but he hadn’t realized I was setting a different trap entirely.

I walked to an ATM, withdrew the small amount of cash I had in my emergency travel fund, and started packing a small bag. Tomorrow, I would meet the man who truly controlled Julian’s destiny.
