Sarena’s affidavit, now formally submitted to CPS, sent ripples through David’s carefully constructed world. Officer Torres confirmed that David’s lawyer had been informed, and the immediate pressure was palpable. David’s public online posts about my “mental instability” grew more frantic, almost desperate. The community was no longer entirely unified behind him; now there were questions.

Then, a new text message appeared on my phone, from an unknown number.

“Ms. Lin? My name is Marcus Brody. I work with David. I think we need to talk.”

My heart jumped. A coworker? The twist was entirely unexpected. David had cultivated an image of corporate professionalism, separating his “home life” from his work persona. The idea of someone from his workplace reaching out was baffling, and terrifying.

I called the number back, my voice barely a whisper. “Mr. Brody? Why are you contacting me?”

“Look, I just… I heard some things,” Marcus said, his voice low, a nervous edge to it. He sounded young, hesitant. “David’s been, uh, talking around the office. Bragging, really.”

Bragging. The word sent a chill down my spine. Bragging about what? About hitting Leo?

“What did he say?” I pressed, my grip tightening on the phone.

“He was, uh, telling a few of us about his ‘discipline methods’ for his son,” Marcus explained, clearing his throat. “Said sometimes you gotta ‘remind them who’s boss.’ Said you can’t let them ‘get away with slacking off.’ He even mentioned the 98% thing. Said he put Leo ‘in his place.'”

My stomach churned. He was casually discussing his violence, normalizing it, perhaps even seeking validation from his subordinates. The callousness was sickening.

“He sounded proud of it,” Marcus continued, his voice growing firmer now, a hint of disgust. “Like he was some kind of hero for being so tough. And… I’ve heard him make comments before. About his wife being ‘too soft’ or ‘too emotional.'”

“What kind of comments?” I asked, my voice tight.

“Just little things, you know? Like, if he was talking about a difficult project, he’d say, ‘This project’s acting like my wife, needs a firm hand to keep it in line.’ That kind of stuff.”

A wave of nausea washed over me. The hidden cruelty, the casual misogyny, now exposed by an unlikely witness. He’d never said those things directly to me, not in that way. But he’d said them to others, behind my back, at his workplace.

“I actually have some of his rants recorded,” Marcus blurted out, as if he couldn’t hold it in anymore. “He’s always going off in meetings, and sometimes, for my own protection, I’ve kept audio logs. Just to make sure I wasn’t getting blamed for his bad moods. He’s got a real temper, Ms. Lin.”

He kept audio logs? The twist deepened. Marcus wasn’t just a witness; he had documented proof, born out of his own self-preservation. He was risking his career, his professional standing, to help me.

“He’s been especially bad since your son went missing,” Marcus added. “Slamming doors, yelling at people for minor mistakes. And he keeps repeating that you’re having a ‘psychotic break,’ and that he’s ‘concerned for Leo’s safety’ because of your instability.”

David’s smear campaign had spread even to his workplace, but it had backfired, pushing an unexpected ally into my corner. Marcus Brody, a junior engineer, now held the key to unlocking David’s professional facade, the one he had so carefully maintained for decades.

“I can give you these logs,” Marcus offered. “But I can’t just send them to CPS myself. It would ruin my career. I’d be fired instantly for recording my boss.”

I understood. He was offering a dangerous, valuable gift.

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “I understand completely.”
