Chapter 13: Rebuilding on Broken Glass

Lily’s discovery hit me like a physical blow. The cold certainty of Julian’s online slander, his teenage venom, shattered the last fragments of my trust. He hadn’t been a passive bystander; he had been an active participant in destroying Valery’s life.

Julian, meanwhile, was growing desperate. He knew I was questioning him, that the truth was dangerously close to the surface. He couldn’t risk the online records surfacing, or me fully trusting Darius. He had to sever that connection.

He found Darius near the riverbank, where the old master often went to sketch or simply sit in quiet contemplation. The morning sun glinted off the water, painting the scene with a deceptive calm.

“Darius,” Julian called out, his voice smooth, betraying none of the panic gnawing at him.

Darius merely looked up, his eyes holding the familiar intensity I had come to recognize. He offered no greeting.

Julian pulled a crisp, white envelope from his blazer pocket. He pulled out a check. “My family has discussed this,” he said, extending the check towards Darius. “We’re prepared to offer you a generous sum. Eighty-five thousand dollars. From the Halloway family estate.”

Darius stared at the check, then at Julian. He didn’t move. He didn’t reach for it.

“For what purpose?” Darius asked, his voice low, like the rumble of distant thunder.

“To help you start fresh,” Julian replied, pushing the envelope closer. “A new studio, perhaps. Somewhere quiet. Away from the Hudson Valley.” He didn’t need to elaborate. The message was clear: leave and forget.

Darius finally spoke, his voice unwavering. “My sister’s legacy, my niece’s heritage, are not for sale, Julian.” He pointedly did not touch the check.

Julian’s composure faltered for a moment. He saw the finality in Darius’s eyes. He couldn’t bribe Darius directly.

He tucked the check back into the envelope, his jaw tight. “Think about it,” he said, forcing a smile. “It’s a substantial offer.”

Later that day, Julian found Toby back at the studio, sweeping up a new layer of glass dust. He handed Toby the envelope.

“Toby,” Julian said, his voice back to its calm, mentoring tone. “Could you do me a favor? This is a delivery for Darius Kincaid. It’s important. Just slip it into his mailbox.”

Toby took the envelope, feeling the stiffness of the check inside. He’d been uneasy since the attic incident. Julian’s secretive behavior, the twelve hundred dollars, Lily’s sharp questions—it had all chipped away at his innocent trust. He’d seen Julian’s face when Darius refused the offer. He sensed something was deeply wrong.

He drove towards Darius’s workshop, the envelope heavy in his hand. But instead of turning down the winding path to Darius’s secluded forge, Toby drove straight to my studio.

I was sitting with Lily, trying to make sense of the new layers of deception. The old journals were spread out on the table, Lily’s printed forum posts beside them.

Toby walked in, his face serious. He held out the envelope. “Maya, Lily,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “Mr. Halloway asked me to deliver this to Darius.”

He didn’t need to say anything more. The look in his eyes, the gravity of his silence, spoke volumes. He placed the envelope carefully on the table, right next to Lily’s printouts.

Lily opened it. Inside was the check, dated that day. Eighty-five thousand dollars. Made out to Darius Kincaid. Julian’s desperate attempt to make Darius disappear had backfired completely. Toby, my unwitting accomplice, had finally chosen his side.
