Grandma, that lady over there smells like dirty rain, but she has a picture of us in her pocket, five-year-old Mia whispered, pulling on my wool sleeve outside the San Jose transit center.

Chapter 14: A Table in San Jose

The faint glow of predawn light barely touched the San Jose skyline when I arrived at Julian’s downtown office building. A crisp, yellow notice was already plastered across the polished glass doors of Apex Fertility. My heart sank.

It wasn’t a simple notice. It was a “Notice of Forfeiture of Lease” and an “Immediate Possession Order.”

Julian’s commercial bank accounts had been frozen overnight. Without the $4,000,000 venture capital infusion, he couldn’t cover his immediate obligations. The office lease alone was $45,000 a month. Payroll for his dozen employees. Utilities. All defaulted instantly.

A few men in work uniforms, carrying tools, walked toward the entrance. They carried a box of digital keypads. They weren’t just changing the locks; they were installing an entirely new access system.

“Excuse me,” I said, approaching one of them. “What’s happening here?”

The man looked at me, then gestured to the notice. “Tenant defaulted. Landlord repossessing the premises. Happens all the time.”

“When did this happen?”

“Overnight. Called us in at 4 AM to secure the place,” he replied, shaking his head. “Looks like a bad one. All the computers are still inside.”

I peered through the glass. Inside, I could see the sleek, modern lobby, the Apex Fertility logo prominently displayed. But it was dark, silent, and empty. A few potted plants stood untouched, the glossy brochures stacked neatly on a table. It looked like everyone had just walked out yesterday, expecting to return.

Julian had been so confident, so dismissive of my warnings. He truly believed he could outrun the consequences of his actions. But a computer algorithm, dispassionate and relentless, had brought his house of cards tumbling down.

I imagined him at home, reeling from the news. His employees, waking up to find their jobs vanished, their paychecks halted. The sheer scale of his recklessness was breathtaking.

I pulled out my phone, looking at Julian’s contact. I almost called him, almost offered comfort. But then I remembered the cease-and-desist, the threats against my grandchildren. He had done this to himself.

The workers started drilling, replacing the keypads. The sound echoed in the quiet morning, a final, concrete consequence of Julian’s ambition. His empire, built on lies and deceit, had been liquidated in a single night.

Grandma, that lady over there smells like dirty rain, but she has a picture of us in her pocket, five-year-old Mia whispered, pulling on my wool sleeve outside the San Jose transit center.
