Chapter 12: Epilogue – The Following Sunday

Eleanor sat frozen, her face a mask of utter despair. The text messages had shattered her carefully constructed façade. She knew I had her.

“What… what else do you have?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her eyes, filled with a desperate terror, were still fixed on my phone.

I didn’t answer immediately. Instead, I navigated to the video files on my phone. I saw her swallow hard, her throat bobbing.

“You mentioned sacrilege,” I stated, my finger hovering over the play button. “You mentioned your ‘heritage house.’ The heirloom pulpit, I believe?”

Her breath hitched. A fresh wave of fear flashed in her eyes. It was a tell. She knew what was coming.

“Let’s watch what really happened tonight,” I said, then pressed play.

I turned the phone, holding it up, letting the screen face her. The single desk lamp caught the glare, but the images were unmistakable.

Her eyes snapped to the screen. She saw her own cottage, dark under the night sky. She saw herself, cloaked in black, wielding the hammer.

The first crack of glass from the video made her flinch. A small, involuntary gasp escaped her lips.

She watched, utterly transfixed, as her digital self systematically smashed her own windows. The high-definition night vision left nothing to the imagination. Every swing, every shard of flying glass, every cold, deliberate movement.

The video then switched to the second angle, showing her disappear inside, only to re-emerge, grunting with effort, dragging the heavy, carved pulpit out through the shattered frame. The thud of it hitting the lawn, the way the wood splintered—it was all there, in stark, undeniable clarity.

Her breath came in short, shallow gasps. Her chest heaved. She was no longer trying to deny, no longer trying to bluff. She was simply witnessing her own undoing.

The third camera angle showed her standing back, surveying the scene, then a quick, almost practiced glance toward my house, as if to confirm the stage was set, the victim identified.

The video played for a full two minutes, capturing every detail of her malicious theater. When it ended, the screen went black, reflecting Eleanor’s own distorted, horrified face.

Her hands had flown up to cover her mouth, but her eyes, wide and bloodshot, remained fixed on the blank screen. A low, guttural sound escaped her, like a whimper. Her entire body seemed to deflate, shrinking into the chair.

“This is…” she stammered, then trailed off, unable to form a coherent word. Her elaborate performance, her perfect crime, had been captured, recorded, and was now being played back to her in horrifying detail.

“This,” I finished for her, my voice quiet but firm, “is you, Sister Gable. Destroying your own property. Framing my son. Conspiring with Deacon Arlo and Deputy Willis. All of it.”

I leaned forward, placing my phone back on the desk, the screen still black. The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by her ragged breathing.

“The bank, Sister Gable,” I continued, “will be very interested in this evidence for your mortgage. The insurance company, even more so, for your claim.”

Her eyes snapped up, a fresh panic replacing the terror. Insurance fraud. Bank foreclosure. These were the real stakes for her, far more than the petty community ordinances.

“Your standing in this community,” I stated, “your reputation, your ministry—all of it will be shattered. And unlike your cottage, Sister Gable, you can’t just rebuild this with an insurance claim.”

I paused, letting the full weight of my words settle on her. She had built her entire life on power and influence within this enclave. Now, she faced its complete collapse.

“So,” I said, a deliberate calm in my voice. “You have five minutes. Dismiss Deputy Willis. Drop all claims against my son. Or I guarantee, by dawn, every financial institution connected to Mount Zion Covenant Community will have this video. And these texts.”
