Chapter 17: The Next Morning

I walked into the kitchen of our townhouse one morning to find Julian already there, a rare occurrence. He stood by the island, a freshly brewed cup of coffee in his hand, looking entirely too composed. On the pristine marble countertop lay a thick document, its stark white pages a stark contrast to the colorful fruit bowl next to it.

“Good morning, Elena,” he said, his voice smooth, devoid of any discernible emotion.

My gaze immediately went to the document. “What is this?”

“A proposal,” he replied, taking a sip of his coffee. “For a quiet resolution.”

I picked it up. It was a non-disclosure agreement. Pages of legalese, clauses about voluntary resignation, a small, insulting settlement offer—a fraction of what I was entitled to. My eyes scanned the fine print, finding the familiar DeWitt Holdings letterhead.

“Sign this,” Julian continued, “and your troubles go away. A clean break. You’ll be able to move on with your life.”

My jaw tightened. “And what about Leo?”

Julian’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Ah, Leo. A sensitive topic.”

My blood ran cold. I knew that tone.

“I’ve had to make some adjustments to his university trust fund,” Julian explained, his voice chillingly casual. “Given the current… instability. His tuition for the upcoming semester, regrettably, has been put on hold.”

My hand crushed the edge of the document. “You wouldn’t.”

“I would,” he affirmed, setting down his coffee cup with a delicate clink. “Unless, of course, you choose to cooperate. Sign the agreement. Restore Leo’s future. It’s really quite simple.”

The silence in the kitchen was suddenly suffocating. My son’s entire future, his education, held hostage. It was a cruel, desperate move, designed to break me where I was most vulnerable.

Just then, Leo walked in, his backpack slung over one shoulder, ready for his morning class. He stopped short, sensing the tension, his eyes moving between Julian and me.

“Everything alright?” he asked, his brow furrowed.

Julian put on his practiced, genial smile. “Your mother and I were just discussing some rather dull legal matters, son.”

Leo’s gaze landed on the NDA in my hand. He saw the DeWitt logo, the prominent words: “Non-Disclosure Agreement.” His eyes flickered, connecting the dots. Without a word, he stepped forward, his expression hardening.

He plucked the document from my grasp. Julian’s smile faltered.

With a sharp, decisive rip, Leo tore the thick stack of papers in half. Then, with another forceful tear, he shredded it into quarters, letting the pieces flutter to the floor between us.

He looked at his father, his eyes blazing. “You don’t get to buy her silence.”

Julian’s face went completely still, a mask of frozen rage. The air crackled with unspoken threats, but Leo stood firm, a protector suddenly risen, defying the man who had always controlled his world.
