Chapter 8: The Enforcer’s Warning

#content-1

The cold rain plastered my hair to my face as I pressed myself against the damp brick wall of The Anchor’s Rest. The music from inside was a dull throb, but beneath it, I could just make out the raised voices. My teeth chattered, partly from the cold, partly from a gnawing fear.

Jenkins’s voice was a frantic murmur, punctuated by the deeper, more menacing tones of the burly man. I strained to catch every word, my heart hammering like a drum against my ribs.

“…questions, Mr. Albright’s wife… she asked about the appraisals…” Jenkins whined, his voice thin with panic.

My breath hitched. He was talking about me. Mark had already warned him, then sent his muscle. The gaslighting about “conspiracy theories” was a tactic to buy time, to shut me down before I got too close.

The burly man’s voice cut through the background noise, sharp and cold. “The boss knows you’ve been asked about Albright. Keep your mouth shut, Jenkins. You understand?”

A shiver ran down my spine. The threat was unmistakable, a clear, brutal warning. Jenkins was visibly shaking, even from my vantage point outside the grimy window. Mark’s control extended far beyond financial manipulation; he commanded fear. This was not just business; this was personal, and it was dangerous.

“I just… I just did what he told me,” Jenkins stammered, his voice almost a sob. “I forged the documents. The numbers… they were all his.”

Forged documents. The words hit me like a physical blow. Elena’s suspicions about inflated values weren’t just suspicions; they were proven facts. Jenkins was Mark’s tool, a petty criminal caught in a web far beyond his depth. This man had helped Mark erase David, profit from his ‘death,’ and secure his illicit deals. The specific betrayal felt like acid in my gut.

“Doesn’t matter what you did,” the enforcer growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous hush. “What matters is what you *say*.”

He paused, then added, his voice chillingly precise, “And remember, Jenkins. The boss doesn’t like loose ends. Especially when it comes to… the body.”

“The body.” The phrase echoed in my mind, sending a fresh wave of ice through my veins. It was the same vague, unsettling reference that had been made in the news clipping, the one about David’s “suicide.” What body? If David committed suicide, why the sinister reference to “the body” with such a menacing undertone?

The implication was terrifying. It wasn’t just a cover-up for an insurance payout or inflated property values. There was something far more sinister at play, something about David’s actual fate. The casual cruelty of the enforcer’s threat against Jenkins, using David’s absence as leverage, was a direct and painful reminder of the stakes.

I pulled back from the wall, my mind racing. Jenkins wasn’t just complicit in financial fraud; he had forged documents relating to David’s death. And Mark’s enforcer was making sure he stayed silent, explicitly linking it to “the body.” This was a direct threat, a physical danger, not just for Jenkins, but for anyone who got too close.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably. The rain felt like needles on my skin, but I barely noticed. I had confirmation: Mark was running a criminal operation, Jenkins was his pawn, and David’s disappearance was directly tied to it, with hints of something far more unsettling than a mere suicide.

Mark’s earlier gaslighting, his dismissive words about my “delusions,” now seemed even more sinister. He was actively trying to discredit me while simultaneously silencing his accomplice with veiled threats. He wanted to make me doubt my sanity, but this conversation proved I was anything but crazy. I was terrifyingly sane, seeing the truth unfold before my very eyes.

I needed to get Jenkins alone. He was scared, and that fear was my only leverage. He knew too much, and his forced compliance was a crack in Mark’s armor. I had to exploit it before Mark’s enforcer sealed his lips for good.

The thought of facing that burly man again, or worse, Mark himself, sent a jolt of pure terror through me. But the image of Leo’s innocent face, the confusion in his eyes when he spoke of his father, hardened my resolve. I wouldn’t let Mark get away with this. I wouldn’t let David’s sacrifice be in vain.

I backed away from the bar, melting into the shadows, the enforcer’s chilling words about “the body” echoing in my ears. This was no longer just about discovering the truth; it was about survival.
