Chapter 8: The Shadow Strategist

#content-1

Eleanor found her father moments later, sprawled on the hallway rug, his breath ragged. Her frantic call brought paramedics within minutes, but Arthur, ever stubborn, refused to remain at Pennsylvania Hospital. After receiving an IV drip and a stern lecture, he signed himself out against medical advice, insisting he needed to be home.

That evening, a different kind of visitor arrived. Rebecca Croft, Harrison’s soft-spoken wife and campaign treasurer, quietly slipped through Arthur’s back garden door. She wore a heavy cloak, pulling it tighter around her as she entered the living room. Her hands trembled slightly.

“Alderman Pendelton,” she whispered, her eyes wide and fearful. “I know this is audacious, but I had to come.”

She claimed Harrison had become “unhinged,” consumed by ambition. Her voice was soft, almost fragile. She spoke of her fear, of being trapped. She offered Arthur a thick manila envelope.

“These are confidential bank records,” Rebecca said, pushing the envelope across the small coffee table. “Details of Harrison’s offshore financial accounts. Proof, if you need it.”

She then pulled out a single sheet of paper, pushing it gently towards him. “Just sign a quiet out-of-court property surrender agreement. In exchange, you’ll receive $800,000 cash, under the table. And a complete retraction of all bribe charges, publicly.”

“Why?” Arthur asked, his voice still a little hoarse from the strain.

Rebecca wrung her hands. “I just… I want this to end. Before someone gets truly hurt.” Her eyes pleaded with him, seemingly a desperate wife seeking peace.
