The John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse in Boston rose like a modern fortress against the gray sky, its glass façade reflecting the dull afternoon light. Inside, its corridors were a stark contrast to the sterile chaos of the hospital.
Clara, carrying my old leather briefcase filled with the decrypted patient data, walked with purpose beside me. My heart still felt bruised, but a new kind of resolve was solidifying within me.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Zhang greeted us in her office, a small, efficient space filled with towering stacks of legal binders. Zhang was all crisp professionalism, her dark suit immaculate, her expression sharp and intelligent.
“Mrs. Aldridge, Ms. Aldridge,” she said, indicating two chairs opposite her desk. “Please, sit.”
Clara placed the briefcase on Zhang’s desk and began explaining our findings, her voice steady and clear as she summarized the data. I watched Zhang’s face as she reviewed the falsified Phase III records, her eyes narrowed in focused intensity.
“Eight patient fatalities,” Zhang murmured, flipping through the printouts, her finger stopping on the details of organ toxicity. “Suppressed during initial FDA authorization. And a subsequent stock valuation of four hundred million dollars, predicated on a successful trial outcome.”
She looked up, her gaze piercing. “This isn’t just a corporate cover-up, Mrs. Aldridge. This is a massive pharmaceutical fraud scheme. Designed to inflate stock value prior to a major acquisition.”
A cold fire ignited within me. Julian’s greed, laid bare.
Zhang picked up her phone. “This is enough. More than enough.” She spoke into the receiver, her voice calm but authoritative. “Convene an emergency grand jury. Immediately. And prepare sweeping subpoenas for all executive communications at Aldridge BioHealth. Every email, every server log, every recorded meeting.”
The speed of her action was breathtaking. I had imagined a long, arduous process, but Zhang moved with the efficiency of a precision instrument.
Two days later, a formal summons arrived at Clara’s temporary safe house. It was addressed to Eleanor Aldridge. I was named as the primary material witness in the federal investigation against Aldridge BioHealth.
Julian had stripped me of my home, my money, my health coverage, and tried to strip me of my mind. But he couldn’t strip me of my truth. Now, I would speak it.
