Chapter 8: Tracing the Shadow-Ghoul

#content-1

The phone call with Eleanor had ripped through Claire’s remaining skepticism like a physical force. The image of the swirling shadows consuming her mother’s face was burned into her memory.

“That ‘hollow thing that drinks’… that’s what I saw, Dad,” Claire said, her voice shaking. “It felt like a premonition. But now it’s real.”

“We know what it is, Claire,” I said, a new kind of grim determination settling over me. “It’s what’s in that basement. That ritual basin. What they’re feeding.”

Claire, a software engineer with an uncanny knack for digital sleuthing, immediately put her skills to work. “Brandon’s always been too clever for his own good,” she muttered. “He probably thought he could hide his tracks.”

She started by digging into Brandon’s digital footprint, not just public social media, but obscure accounts, encrypted messages, anything he might have used for his more… esoteric interests. Hours passed in silence, broken only by the rapid click of her keyboard.

Then, a breakthrough.

“Found something,” Claire announced, her voice tight with focused intensity. “An encrypted forum. It’s… dark. Really dark.”

She sent me a screenshot. The forum’s title was obscured, but the threads were horrifying: discussions of ‘life-siphon’ entities, pacts, rituals, and the mechanics of draining energy from living vessels.

One thread caught my eye. Its title was in an older, archaic script: “The Shadow-Ghoul of Sterling Heights – Revival Lore.”

“Sterling Heights,” I whispered, the name of their new town ringing with a sinister new meaning. “It’s an ancient legend. From right here.”

Claire nodded, her eyes wide. “They weren’t just summoning *a* spirit. They were summoning *the* spirit. A specific one. This forum talks about its history, its hunger, how it drains vitality, even memories, from its anchor. It feeds.”

The pieces clicked into place with a horrifying precision. Eleanor wasn’t sick. She was an anchor. A vessel.

“Brandon didn’t just stumble into this,” I said, my voice barely audible. “He researched it. He planned it.”

“This isn’t just for ‘prosperity,’ Dad,” Claire added, her voice chillingly calm. “This is for power. And Mom is the sacrifice.”
