Chapter 8: Unanswered Silence

#content-1

👉 Previous decision: You witnessed the syndicate’s swift and brutal ‘cleanup’ of Marcus Hensley.

Two hours later, the first rays of dawn painted the upstate New York sky in muted grays and purples. I sat in my idling car, parked across the street from Aethelgard Sanctuary’s ornate gates, watching the early morning shift change with a numb kind of detachment. The memory of Marcus’s strangled cry, the silent, efficient brutality of the fixers, still resonated in my ears.

The syndicate had reclaimed its technology, its secrets, and its careless associate. Marcus Hensley had vanished, swallowed by the underworld’s cold embrace. My hands gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white. I was physically safe.

A sudden buzz made me jump. My phone, in the cup holder, vibrated. It was a brief, functional text message.

**Gavin: *Marcus is gone. Clara won’t speak to us. Don’t go home.***

My brother. He was safe, too, somewhere out there in the world, still connected, still watching. But his words were a cold comfort. Clara. My daughter, still indoctrinated, still within those walls. Her mind, perhaps irrevocably altered. The memories, the years of her life and mine, stolen and gone forever.

I looked at the sanctuary gates. A new group of “members” was being welcomed inside, their faces beaming with the same tranquil, empty smiles I had seen on so many others. The silent machinery of the cult continued to hum in the dark, its influence unbroken, its reach still vast. The truth was out, but the system remained.

Some wounds never truly heal, they simply find new ways to bleed in the quiet, unanswered silence.

THE END – TRUE ENDING
