Chapter 9: Albright’s Oath

#content-1

The conference room at the New York County Supreme Court felt hushed. A court reporter sat ready, fingers poised. Marcus Albright, Chief Legal Counsel, took the stand.

His face was pale, his hands clasped tightly before him. I knew the institutional fear, the career risks he was taking. But his conscience, it seemed, had finally won.

Albright, under sworn oath, broke corporate non-disclosure restrictions. His voice was steady as he spoke.

“Evelyn Reynolds,” he testified, “selected Ms. Garcia not to block Mr. Garcia. Her intent was to prevent predatory board members.”

He continued, his gaze unwavering. “The trust was designed to stop them from liquidating Arthur’s personal restructuring fund. When his own debts came due.”

A revelation. Evelyn hadn’t made me her heir out of spite or random kindness. She had chosen me to protect Arthur, her old friend’s son, from his own ambitious, reckless partners. And perhaps, from himself.
