While I was deep within the compound’s underbelly, retrieving the hidden truths, a storm was brewing in the main boardroom upstairs. Arthur had called an emergency meeting with his syndicate investors, hoping to shore up support after Marcus’s humiliation at my ranch.
The room was opulent, dark wood and heavy leather chairs, the air thick with tension and the smell of expensive cigars. Arthur, seated at the head of the long table, looked visibly stressed, his usual bluster replaced by a nervous tremor in his hands.
“Silas Halloway is a senile old man,” Arthur tried to assure the grim-faced investors. “He’s a nuisance, nothing more. We will have his property by week’s end.”
Suddenly, Marcus stood up, slamming his fist on the table. The glasses rattled.
“A nuisance?” Marcus sneered, his eyes blazing with a dangerous ambition. “He disarmed four of our best men, Dad! He burned down our barn! This isn’t just a nuisance; it’s an embarrassment. A weakness!”
The investors exchanged uneasy glances. Marcus had been cultivating his own faction within the syndicate, a younger, more aggressive guard impatient with Arthur’s old-school methods.
“You’re losing control, old man,” Marcus continued, his voice dripping with contempt. “You can’t even evict one retired veteran. How are you supposed to lead Krenshaw Tactical against real threats?”
Arthur half-rose from his chair, his face turning a mottled red. “You dare question my leadership?”
“I dare replace it,” Marcus snapped, his hand darting to his sidearm. He drew the pistol, the metallic click echoing loudly in the suddenly silent room. The barrel glinted under the chandeliers, pointed directly at Arthur.
Gasps filled the boardroom.
“You’re through, Arthur,” Marcus declared, his voice hard and uncompromising. “Sign the resignation papers. Now. Or you won’t walk out of here alive.”
The threat hung in the air, cold and deadly. Arthur, his mouth agape, stared at his own son, a betrayer in his own boardroom. The power struggle had escalated from whispers to a full-blown mutiny, threatening Arthur’s life.
