Chapter 18: Two Years Later

My mind flashed back to a decade ago, navigating the service tunnels of this very complex during a corporate infrastructure upgrade. Marcus had overlooked my intimate knowledge of Apex’s physical layout, the network of passages known only to a few facilities managers and me.

“Drop it!” a police officer yelled, stepping forward.

Without a second thought, I turned and sprinted towards a nondescript service door I knew was tucked between two ventilation shafts. The private security guards were faster, barreling after me, Marcus shouting orders.

I fumbled with the handle, pushing it open just as a large hand grabbed my shoulder. I twisted, ducking under the arm, and slipped through the door, slamming it shut behind me. The heavy metal thud echoed through the concrete space.

Footsteps pounded on the other side. “Open up, Albright!” Marcus’s voice was muffled but furious.

I didn’t pause. The air in the service tunnels was thick with the smell of dust, mildew, and stale coolant. Pipes snaked overhead, creating a low, groaning symphony. I knew this maze better than they did. This wasn’t polished executive floors; this was the raw, unglamorous underbelly of Apex Urban Holdings.

I ran, my lungs burning, the thumping of my heart drowning out the distant shouts. I heard them trying to force the door, then the sound of heavy boots entering the tunnel system behind me. They were following.

I darted left, then right, taking a sharp turn down a narrow passage that led to the loading docks. There, among stacks of forgotten pallets and overflowing dumpsters, was the designated rendezvous point. Devon.

I burst through another service door, blinking in the sudden glare of streetlights filtering into the loading bay. Devon’s beat-up sedan was parked discreetly, its engine idling. He saw me, his eyes wide, and unlocked the passenger door.

“Get in!” he yelled.

I scrambled into the car, slamming the door shut. Devon hit the gas, the tires squealing as we sped out of the loading bay just as Marcus’s private security burst from the tunnel entrance, their faces contorted with rage.

I slumped back in the seat, my body trembling, adrenaline coursing through me. My hands were shaking so violently I couldn’t even clench them. “Claire…” I whispered, the name a bitter taste on my tongue.

Devon glanced at me, his face grim. “She set you up, Eleanor. Just like I said.”

The betrayal hit harder than any physical blow. My daughter. My own flesh and blood. She had willingly, knowingly, led me into a trap. Not out of fear for Maya, but out of a twisted loyalty to Marcus, to the life he promised her. She was not a victim in this anymore; she was complicit, a willing participant in Marcus’s dark scheme. The last shred of hope I had for her redemption evaporated, leaving behind a cold, desolate ache.

“She’s gone,” I said, my voice hollow. “She’s truly gone.”
