The federal marshal’s office, a drab, utilitarian building, felt like another world entirely from my vibrant clinic. I sat across from Marshal Reynolds, a stern-faced woman with a no-nonsense demeanor. My attorney, Ms. Davies, was with me, prepared for what felt like a desperate plea.

“Marshal,” Ms. Davies began, “we understand the necessity of federal asset forfeiture in cases of criminal enterprise. However, Dr. Higgins’s wildlife rehabilitation clinic provides a critical public service. She cares for injured and orphaned animals, many of them endangered species. It’s a non-profit, community-supported facility.”

I leaned forward, trying to project a sense of urgency and dedication. “We have permits for every animal, a dedicated staff, and a long-standing history of excellent care. Displacing the clinic would be catastrophic for the animals currently under our care and for the region’s wildlife rescue efforts.”

Marshal Reynolds listened patiently, her expression unchanging. She had heard these kinds of appeals before. “Dr. Higgins, I appreciate the work you do. I truly do. But the law is clear.”

She pointed to a thick binder on her desk. “Federal forfeiture statutes, specifically Title 18, Section 981, mandate the seizure and liquidation of all assets acquired through laundered funds or used in furtherance of criminal activity. There are very few exceptions.”

“But couldn’t a lease exemption be granted?” I pressed, my voice cracking slightly. “We could continue operating under federal oversight, perhaps, until a new facility can be found?”

Marshal Reynolds shook her head slowly. “Unfortunately, no. The property itself, the land and the barn, was identified as being purchased with laundered money. It’s a core asset in the criminal enterprise. Granting an exemption, even for a charitable organization, would set a dangerous precedent and undermine the integrity of the forfeiture process.”

She consulted a legal document. “A federal magistrate specifically ruled that because the clinic land was originally acquired through tainted funds, no lease exemptions can be granted. The property must be seized, appraised, and eventually auctioned off to satisfy the tax debts and restitution orders against Mr. Kincaid.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and final. No exemptions. My seven years of work, my dedication, the lives of hundreds of animals I had saved—it all amounted to nothing in the face of federal law. The clinic, my sanctuary, was a part of Brandon’s criminal empire, tainted by his fraud.

“What about the animals?” I asked, a lump forming in my throat. “Apollo, the eagle? The injured fox kits, the orphaned raccoons?”

Marshal Reynolds softened slightly. “We’ll work with local animal control and other rehabilitation centers to ensure all animals are safely relocated. You’ll be given a reasonable timeframe to facilitate the transfers.”

A reasonable timeframe. My life’s work, reduced to a “reasonable timeframe” for evacuation. I stood there, defeated. I had brought down a titan, exposed a criminal, and in doing so, had inadvertently destroyed my own world. The victory felt hollow, a heavy weight pressing down on my chest. There was nothing more to be done. The barn, my barn, was lost.
