Suddenly, bright floodlights pierced the windows of the studio. A bullhorn blared, its distorted voice cutting through the humid air. “Arthur Pendelton! This is Silas Pendelton! Surrender the tapes and Lily! You’re under arrest!”
Arthur rushed to the window, Lily clutching his hand. Beyond the perimeter of his property, two military MPs stood alongside Uncle Silas. Their jeeps, lights blazing, illuminated the dense tree line. They were locking down the area.
Julian grabbed Arthur’s arm. “They’re here for the tape. Not for you, not really. They want to bury this.”
“You said you weren’t the killer,” Arthur accused, his voice thick with a confusing mix of relief and betrayal. “You sent me those messages. You made me think you were a monster.”
“It was the only way,” Julian said, his eyes scanning the approaching figures. “The only way to trigger your broadcast. My unit, Army Intelligence… they covered this up. My commanding officers orchestrated it. I tried to go through official channels. They silenced me, buried my reports. They were going to make me disappear, too.”
He pointed toward the master reel. “Your show, Arthur. Your audience, 40,000 listeners across three counties. That’s the only platform immune to federal gag orders. They can’t stop you if you just… air it.”
Outside, Silas barked orders. The MPs advanced.
Then, the sky above Fort Bragg began to shimmer with an eerie, unnatural purple. A low, crackling hum filled the air, not from the radio, but from the very atmosphere. Lights on the MPs’ vehicles flickered.
“A geomagnetic solar storm,” Julian said, his voice grim. “It’s hitting early. Knocking out telephone lines. Causing shortwave frequencies to cross-bleed.”
He looked at Arthur, a desperate plea in his eyes. “This is our chance. The storm will amplify anything we put on the air. It could reach everyone.”
Silas shouted again, closer now. “Last chance, Arthur! Don’t make me come in there!”
Arthur looked at the tape in his hand, then at Lily, then at Julian. He had a choice: stand his ground, or make a break for it with Lily, trusting Julian’s desperate plan.
