Chapter 12: The Next Morning

Lauren’s head snapped towards the window, her eyes still wide with terror, then back to me, a fresh wave of fury washing over her features. The flashing lights painted the study in an eerie, pulsing glow.

“You called them,” she seethed, the realization dawning on her. “You actually called the police on your own sister!”

“You left me no choice, Lauren,” I stated, my voice calm despite the adrenaline coursing through me. I kept the red binder slightly raised, subtly ensuring the mortgage statements were visible. “Maya’s scholarship. The forged medical records. The estate’s illegal mortgages. It’s all here.”

She lunged, not at me, but for the binder. Her fingers, sharp and desperate, grazed the edge of the pages. I instinctively pulled back, shielding the evidence.

“Give me that!” she shrieked, her voice high and frantic. “You won’t get away with this! I’ll tell them you planted it! That you broke in! That you assaulted me!”

A muffled thud echoed from the front of the house, followed by the distinct sound of a heavy door being forced open.

“Police! Search warrant!” a voice boomed, clear and authoritative, from the front hall.

Lauren froze, her body rigid, her hand still extended towards the binder. Her gaze was fixed on the study door, which was slowly, inexorably, swinging open.

Detective Kasparian stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by the harsh overhead light of the hall. Behind her, two uniformed officers, their faces grim, moved into position, securing the perimeter of the room. A third officer, holding a body camera, slowly advanced, its lens clearly aimed at us.

The heated confrontation, the screaming admissions, the desperate lunge for the evidence—all of it was cut short, mid-sentence, mid-lunge. The air in the study, thick with anger and accusations, suddenly felt thin, electric.

Lauren’s eyes, still wide with a mixture of rage and disbelief, flickered between me, the binder, and the stoic figure of Detective Kasparian. Her mouth opened, as if to scream another threat, but no sound came out. The sheer presence of the law enforcement officers, solid and unyielding, seemed to physically deflate her.

My parents, their faces pale and confused, appeared at the edge of the dining room archway, drawn by the commotion. My mother’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes fixed on Lauren. My father, usually so composed, looked utterly bewildered.

Detective Kasparian took another step into the room, her gaze sweeping over the scene. Her eyes met mine, a brief, silent acknowledgment passing between us. Then they settled firmly on Lauren.

“Lauren Garver-Benn,” Detective Kasparian stated, her voice calm and authoritative, cutting through the stunned silence. “You are under arrest.”

The words hung in the air, cold and definitive. The game was over.
