My Parents Abandoned My 78-Year-Old Grandmother to Steal Her Foundation's Funds — They Didn't Know I'd Seen the Bylaws
The ring of my phone sliced through the quiet hum of my living room. The caller ID displayed “Richard Vance.” My breath hitched.
I picked it up, taking a deep, calming breath. “Richard.”
His voice was immediately cold, cutting, and laced with barely suppressed rage. “Elena, what is the meaning of this slanderous nonsense?”
He was referring to the legal letter. His anger was palpable, a testament to the fact that my first salvo had landed its mark.
“I think the letter was quite clear, Richard,” I replied, keeping my voice steady, professional.
“Clear?” he scoffed, his voice rising in volume. “It’s a collection of baseless accusations, a pack of lies! You’re harassing your own family, Elena!”
“I am representing Eleanor’s interests,” I corrected him, “which you and Brenda seem to have abandoned.”
“Don’t you dare talk about abandonment!” he roared. “Eleanor is a confused old woman, and you are manipulating her! I’ll have you know I’m already drafting an ethics complaint to your firm’s managing partner.”
The threat was not unexpected. He would try to weaponize my career, to intimidate me with professional repercussions.
“A baseless ethics complaint, Richard, would expose far more than you realize,” I countered, my voice flat. “I suggest you reconsider.”
There was a moment of silence on his end, a pause as he processed my calm response. He clearly expected me to panic.
Then, his tone shifted, becoming more menacing. “We need to discuss this face-to-face. Immediately.”
“I agree,” I said, surprising him. “A meeting is necessary.”
“At my office, first thing tomorrow,” he demanded, his arrogance returning.
“No,” I stated, without hesitation. “At my home. Tonight. 7:00 PM.”
Another pause, this one longer. He was clearly not accustomed to having his demands overridden.
“My home, Richard,” I repeated, emphasizing the word. “You and Brenda. Alone.”
He let out a short, incredulous laugh. “You think you can dictate terms to me, Elena?”
“The choice is yours, Richard,” I said, my voice unwavering. “Either we discuss this civilly tonight, or my next correspondence will be with the Foundation’s federal oversight committee and the district attorney’s office.”
The threat of federal charges, of criminal investigation, finally hit home. I could hear his breath quicken on the other end of the line.
“Fine,” he snarled, the word heavy with reluctant acquiescence. “7:00 PM. But don’t expect a pleasant conversation.”
“I don’t expect anything less than what you and Brenda have consistently delivered, Richard,” I replied, my voice devoid of warmth.
I heard a click as he abruptly hung up. My grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles turned white.
The venom in his voice, the sheer audacity of his threats, left a bitter taste in my mouth. He still believed he could bluster his way out of this, that he could intimidate me into submission.
He believed his social standing, his carefully constructed reputation, was impregnable. He
