Chapter 9: The Panic Wire Transfer

#content-1

The news of Chloe’s desperate wire transfer attempt sent a jolt of adrenaline through me. One hundred and ten thousand dollars. Her audacity, her pure greed, was staggering. It wasn’t just Mark’s fraud; it was Chloe’s active participation, her attempt to salvage what she could from their crumbling empire.

Lucas remained on the phone, his voice steady despite the chaos he was witnessing. “They’ve got her, Clara,” he confirmed. “Two state troopers are with her now. She’s being questioned in Mark’s office.”

I imagined Chloe, trapped, her usual fiery defiance probably turning into a frantic, desperate defense. Her attempt to escape with the company’s money was a glaring admission of guilt, a panicked reaction to the sudden presence of law enforcement.

Detective Callahan texted Lucas again, a brief update. *Wire transfer attempt flagged. Federal implications. She’s definitely compromised.*

Federal implications. This wasn’t just small-town fraud anymore. This was a deeper, more serious crime.

The irony wasn’t lost on me. While Chloe was frantically trying to loot the company, I was sitting in a hospital, struggling to buy basic formula for my son. Their priorities were so twisted, so utterly self-serving.

I asked Lucas, “Is Mark still there?”

“No sign of him,” Lucas replied. “He must have slipped out before the full lockdown. He probably knew this was coming once the warrant was issued.”

Mark, ever the coward, abandoning his fiancée in the face of trouble. It fit his pattern perfectly.

The hospital news report updated, showing more activity at Hensley Supply. Crime scene tape now cordoned off the entire property. A uniformed officer stood guard at the main entrance, preventing anyone from entering or leaving.

The small-town gossip machine, usually so vibrant, seemed to stutter. The explicit visuals of police cars and flashing lights were harder to explain away than diner rumors. The whispers would still fly, but now, doubt would start to creep in.

Hours later, Lucas came to the hospital, looking tired but grimly satisfied. “Chloe’s been taken downtown,” he informed me, setting down his coffee. “She’s facing charges for attempted wire fraud, on top of the aggravated assault.”

“And Mark?” I asked.

Lucas shook his head. “Still no official word. But Callahan said they’re treating him as a person of interest in both the corporate fraud and the assault. Chloe’s interview might change things.”

My mind went back to the confrontation in the hospital parking lot, Mark offering me $20,000 to lie. His desperate attempt to cover up Chloe’s crime. Now, it was clear: they were both deeply embroiled.

The silence of the NICU room, broken only by Arthur’s gentle breathing, felt heavy with the weight of impending justice. The police had the servers, they had the letter, and now they had Chloe’s panicked confession in the form of an attempted wire transfer. The truth, finally, was beginning to surface.
