When a Mob Matriarch Frames Her Animal-Behaviorist Daughter-in-Law for Animal Cruelty over a $150,000 Torn Gown to Enforce a Zero-Asset Divorce, a Hidden Collar Camera and Forensic Medical Record E...
Silvio’s words were absolute. The council meeting dissolved as quickly and quietly as it had begun.
Helena stood up, her movements stiff, her gaze fixed straight ahead. She didn’t look at me, or Julian, or even Silvio. Two large men, not guards but personal enforcers usually reserved for high-level operations, materialized at the library door. They didn’t touch her, but their presence was a silent, unmoving boundary.
Helena was escorted out of the library, not roughly, but with an unmistakable air of finality. She was being removed from the head table, from her seat of power. She was under house arrest, a silent, internal banishment.
Julian remained slumped in his chair, staring at the polished mahogany. He didn’t say a word, didn’t make a move to follow his mother. His silence was deafening.
Silvio motioned to Marco, his assistant, who immediately retrieved the stack of legal papers Helena had used to frame me. The felony cruelty complaint, the asset seizure orders, Frank Gianna’s fraudulent certifications.
Silvio took them from Marco. Without a word, he walked to the ornate fireplace, where a low fire crackled cheerfully against the evening chill.
He held the papers for a moment, then dropped them into the flames.
The court stamps, Helena’s signature, Gianna’s notarizations—all of it curled, blackened, and turned to ash. The symbols of my imminent destruction vanished in a puff of smoke. My exoneration was not public, but it was absolute within the DeLuca world.
“The annulment papers will be ready by sunrise,” Silvio confirmed, turning to me. “A car will be waiting for you. Your research equipment will be transported to any location you designate, at our expense.”
I nodded, my throat tight. The quiet finality of it all was overwhelming. No shouting, no public confession, just the silent, methodical dismantling of Helena’s scheme and my ties to their world.
“Thank you, Uncle Silvio,” I managed, my voice hoarse.
He merely gave a slight inclination of his head. “The Outfit values stability, Maeve. Your presence here, under these circumstances, was a threat to it.”
I understood. It wasn’t about justice for me, but about maintaining their own twisted order. My freedom was a byproduct of their self-preservation.
I walked back to the annex, past the empty hallway where the guards had stood. My lab equipment was already being carefully packed by Outfit personnel, just as Silvio had promised. Whiskers purred, rubbing against my legs, oblivious to the silent drama that had just transpired.
I began to gather my personal effects. My life here was over. The marriage, the supposed family, the dreams of a quiet research career within the estate—all gone. But I was free. I was untainted.
As the first hint of dawn painted the sky outside my window, a car pulled up to the estate’s main entrance. It was time to leave.
