Chapter 15: Epilogue / Resolution

The following morning, the quiet before the storm, Harrison stormed into my guest bedroom. The door slammed against the wall, rattling a small framed picture on the dresser.

He had somehow discovered I met with Marcus. His face was a mask of furious disbelief, his usual smooth composure completely shattered.

“You met with Winslow?” he roared, his hands clenched into fists. “What did you sign, Eleanor?”

He strode toward me, stopping just inches away. I held my ground, though my heart hammered against my ribs.

“You won’t get away with this,” he hissed. “This is insane. Your ‘accusations’ are destroying everything I’ve built.”

He pulled a folded legal-looking document from his jacket pocket. “Sign this indemnity waiver, Eleanor. Now. Or I swear to God, I will use every power at my disposal.”

My eyes scanned the header: a temporary state-sanctioned conservatorship. He meant to place me under involuntary commitment, to lock down my remaining assets and silence me permanently.

“I have state police powers at my disposal,” he continued, his voice low and menacing. “Sixty days in a private psychiatric facility. You’ll be medicated, docile. Unable to file anything.”

My phone, the old burner Arthur had given me, buzzed. Harrison snatched it from the bedside table before I could react.

He barked into it. “Samuel? Yes, she’s here. She’s being completely irrational.”

Then he put the phone on speaker, holding it out to me. My father’s voice, cold and authoritarian, filled the room.

“Eleanor,” Samuel said, his tone like chipped ice. “This is beyond a personal squabble. The family legacy is bigger than your personal feelings.”

He paused, letting the words sink in. “You must comply. Do you understand?”

My father, the man who preached honor and duty, was telling me to surrender to my abuser, to sacrifice my sanity and my rights for his precious political legacy.

I looked at Harrison, then at the phone, a sudden, chilling calm settling over me. They thought they had me cornered.

“Alright,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “I understand, Samuel. I’ll sign it.”

Harrison’s face relaxed slightly, a flicker of triumph in his eyes.

“But not now,” I continued, meeting his gaze. “I’m exhausted. My campaign security guard, Ken, he leaves his shift at 7:00 AM. I’ll sign it then, after he’s gone. I want to clear my head first.”

Harrison considered it for a moment, then nodded. He wanted me compliant, not defiant. He wanted to watch me sign, to see my surrender. He thought he had won.

He pocketed the waiver, a predatory smile returning to his face. “Good. We’ll revisit this in the morning, Eleanor.”

He didn’t know that by 7:00 AM, the fuse would already be lit.
