Chapter 9: Trapped in the Inner Chamber

#content-1

Brenda stared at the flashing red light on the wall panel, her face a mask of dawning horror. Evelyn stood frozen beside her, eyes wide, fixed on the growing chaos outside.

The sirens below had turned into a cacophony, mingled with the shouts of men and the distinct slam of heavy doors.

“They’re here,” Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible.

Brenda looked at me, her eyes pleading. “Marcus, you have to stop them! Leo said—”

I didn’t let her finish. I knew what Leo said. I knew what Brenda believed. But the silent alarm had been triggered. Kincaid was here, and there was no stopping that now.

My hand darted to another, less obvious panel hidden behind a false electrical outlet. I pressed the flush-mounted button.

A low, mechanical groan vibrated through the floor. From above, with a deliberate, heavy thud, a thick steel fire-roll shutter began to descend. It moved fast, sealing off the vault corridor, cutting Brenda and Evelyn off from the main penthouse living area.

“Hey!” Brenda yelled, spinning around. She made a desperate lunge, but the heavy steel curtain was already halfway down, forming an impenetrable barrier.

The shutter slammed into place with a resounding clang, effectively trapping them inside the vault corridor.

I heard Brenda banging on the steel, her shouts muffled. “Marcus, what are you doing?! Open this!”

But I was already moving. My eyes scanned the room, finding the barely visible seam in the back wall. The hidden rear service hatch. My only way out.
