Part 1

**My Landlord Hid My Daughter in the Town Hall for Months — Then I Heard a Lullaby That Blew Up Her Lies.**

It was just another Tuesday, polishing the old brass fixtures in the Havenwood Community Hall. I took the job to keep myself busy.

The town janitor, Marcus Tate, stepped out of the shadows. His face was a mask of panic as he gripped my wrist hard.

Before I could even protest his strange urgency, I heard it: a faint, broken whimper, undeniably Lily’s.

My blood ran cold. Lily was supposed to be at a specialized boarding school, far away. David and Bethany had insisted I was “unstable” and she needed extra care.

Marcus pulled me closer to a dimly lit storage room door, his eyes wide with fear. The whimpering continued, now with a soft, melodic hum accompanying it.

It was the “Starfall Lullaby.” A tune only Lily and I knew, a secret melody we’d made up together.

My heart hammered against my ribs. This wasn’t some other child. This was my Lily.

I lunged for the door, twisting the cold brass knob. It was locked tight.

I banged on the wood, my voice a strangled whisper.

“Lily? Lily, is that you?”

No answer, only the muffled, desperate sounds of a song that broke my heart.

Who had locked my daughter in here, and why couldn’t I get to her?

Part 2

I hammered on the door again, my breath coming in ragged gasps. The faint lullaby was still there, a ghost of a sound.

Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the far end of the hallway. Bethany Croft, my landlord, stepped into the dim light.

Her face was perfectly calm, almost serene, a stark contrast to my frantic state.

Her voice was like ice.

“Evelyn.”

“Are you having another episode?”

She glided towards me, her eyes narrowed.

“Lily is at school. You know that.”

“You need to calm down.”

Just then, the familiar sound of a police cruiser pulling up outside reached us. Sheriff Brody’s car.

Bethany offered him a tight smile as he entered. He looked at me, then at Bethany’s composed face.

“Evelyn,” Sheriff Brody said, his voice regretful.

“Perhaps it’s best if you step outside for a moment.”

He took my arm gently, leading me away. I twisted my head back, desperate for one last glance at the locked door. My daughter was still behind it, unheard by anyone but me.
