Chapter 1: O Silêncio Assustador

#content-1

Part 1

💔 **My husband abandoned me in labor for a cult ritual — and returned to find our baby gone.**

Elias told me the “Festival of the First Mother” was non-negotiable, a sacred duty. I just hoped our baby would understand.

I was bleeding, contractions tightening, but he simply smiled, promised to return before dawn, and walked out the door.

Three hours later, alone and faint, I called 911 myself from the cold bathroom floor.

Two days later, Elias returned, whistling, keys jingling.

He opened the door to our silent house, and the color drained from his face as he saw the empty space where the bassinette should have been.

His whistling stopped abruptly. The silence of the house pressed in, thick and suffocating. He scanned the living room, then the hall, a puzzled frown creasing his brow.

“Sarah?” he called out, his voice a whisper. No reply.

His gaze landed on the coffee table. There, precisely centered, lay a single, official hospital discharge folder. The bold type on its cover declared the devastating truth: “Stillbirth.”

Part 2

I lay in the sterile hospital bed, the fluorescent lights harsh above me. Detective Khan had just left after asking her initial questions.

I’d kept my answers brief, avoiding any mention of the cult for now.

The door creaked open again, and Lena rushed in, her face streaked with tears. She dropped to her knees by my bedside, clutching my hand.

“Sarah,” she whispered, her voice raw.

“What happened?”

“He wouldn’t let me call,” I choked out, the words catching in my throat.

“Not at first. He said Elder Maeve’s blessing was enough.”

My sister’s grip tightened. I continued, tears finally flowing.

“He just left me there, bleeding.”

“Hours passed before he finally said okay. But it was too late.”

Lena pulled back, her eyes wide with horror, then hardening into a fierce anger.

“Why?” she demanded, standing abruptly.

“Why would he risk our baby’s life for their ridiculous cult?”
